Thanks for the suggestion - my old mechanic (who was awesome) suggested that I take it to the dealer - Yikes! I've spent a lot of money on the van this year and I know you can't get out of the dealer shop for less than about $700.
You have already paid the guy $1300 to fix your car. I think you should take it back to him and have him prove to you that the belt was installed correctly. Have him take off the front passenger-side wheel and turn the crank shaft pulley so that its timing mark lines up exactly with the indicator mark on the engine. The #1 cylinder should then be at top dead center. It make take another full revolution of the crank shaft to get it to top dead center because the crank shaft goes around twice for each revolution of the cam shafts. The plastic covers over the cam shaft sprockets have little circular windows that have rubber plugs keeping dirt, etc. out. He should open those plugs and show you that the cam sprockets are properly aligned with the fixed timing marks on the backing plates that the cam covers are bolted to. Each cam sprocket has one of its teeth marked with a small circular depression to indicate which tooth should align with the timing mark when the engine is at top dead center. The marked tooth of both cam sprockets should both be perfectly aligned with their respective backing plate timing mark. If one or both are off by a tooth you will get pinging or worse. Good luck. I hope you don't have to pay any more money to fix this problem.
Sounds kind of fishy to me... now a days engines are equipted with an engine knock sensor as part of the timing control that even with bad gas should not ping. I agree it sounds more like he missed a tooth on one of the gears. You should however notice a varying rpm at idle (fluctuating high then low) or at least some rough idling... maybe slight back fire or lost of power at high speed. These symtoms is a sure bet that he missed a gear. ~ Vger
Edited to add: be the "squeeky wheel" and complain that something is not right, you paid a lot of money for "his expertise"!
We had a little accident with our 2002 Odyssey that snapped off the left-side black plastic rocker panel (I think that's what it's called). I've been trying to find the part on-line with no luck. Any ideas on good websites to find older Odyssey parts? Thanks.
My 2002 rocker panel came off when rubbing against a snow bank a few years ago. The dealer put it back on in 5 minutes. If it's damaged you will probably need a new or used one. Maybe a used auto scrap dealer in your arear has that part from a Odyssey that was in an accident.
while high speed wind drag from the antena could make some noise, I would think more of us would complain since all our vans have it at the same place. Does the sound change as you speed up and slow down? Does the buzzing occur when the van is sitting still and you rev the engine in "park" or "neutral"? Does it occur past a certain speed or at a certain rpm? does it occur both when the window is up and down? Does it occur when you have the vent openned to outside air and air circulation inside only? These are some things you can do to try and isolate where the sound is coming from. Mainly to asertain whether it is caused by car or air movement, or something mechanical or loose body part.
My 2000 Odyssey EX is Blowing the ACC Socket Fuse 9. There appears to be a dead short in the system. There is continuity between the positive and ground on both sockets. I have tested both sockets and the short is not in the sockets. I have not done any modifications and have nothing plugged into the sockets. Is there a relay that might be stuck causing a short? Where should I look for a short in the system?
Hi kliberty, not every Ody is a clunker... just enough to force them to make recalls. I happen to be on my fourth tranny. My beef is that I bought an extended warrenty. When my tranny went out the first time, the dealer used the "recall" to pay for the fix. Then when my tranny went out the second time 40,000 miles later it was now beyond my extended warrenty and since they used the "recall" they wanted me to pay for the fix. I complained saying why didn't they used the extended warrenty the first time since it was covered, and the "recall" this time? They called me a "bad" customer for complaining. We bought three Hondas from them, recommended my sister-in-law to buy a Honda from them, recomended our fellow church member to buy a Honda from them, and they call me a "bad" customer. So much for being loyal! I will never reccomend that dealer, and tell everyone of how I was treated and to buy elsewhere. Aside from the dealer, the tranny, and the clock light, the Ody has held up with its normal wear and tear for us. I've been cleaning the Linear Solenoid filters on the tranny and it seems to keep it going for awhile, so just use the Ody to go on local trips. We have a 2002 Toyota Camery that has been very good on milage and being trouble free for our long trips, just not in the comfort size like the Ody... maybe we'll buy a Sienna. Best on your Ody. Vger
