Purchase a 2000 Protege?

My 2002 Subaru Impreza 2.5RS just died with >172K miles. We are buying a house, so money is tight right now. I am thinking about purchasing a 2000 Mazda Protege with <100K miles for $1000 but would like some feedback from Protege owners on their experience with this vehicle.

Is it reliable with higher miles?
What major repairs should have typically occured by this point (timing belt, etc)?
What major repairs need to be done after 100K miles?
What do I need to know about the Protege?

I'm just looking for something to last me maybe a year or two until I've saved up enough money for a new car. Any input regarding the Protege would be much appreciated.

Yea. i got a 2000 Mazda Protege and its a good running car. It has alot of power for a 4 cylinder. My advice to you is if you get a mazda protege i would buy it because its good on gas and a good reliable car. Parts arent the expensive for it either.

I have a 2000 es and i am the original owner. I have 140,000 miles on it.
recently, I replaced a clutch (first time) and I'm currently experiencing issues with emissions systems that I am trying to solve.

I think it's a good car for the money.

Only mechanical problems I 've had with car was the timing belt broke right before 60,000 miles and had to have some repairs with that. see if you can have that inspected.
