gauges peg with brights on

I have an 87 nova. When I use my brights,fuel and temp gauges peg.Also the warning lights light up for four way flashers.When lights are dimmed needles slowly return to normal.So far nothing bad has happened (18000 miles),but I know it should be fixed.Any answers?THANX!

    Look for a bad ground on the instrument cluster, a broken instrument cluster printed circuit, or defective dimmer switch.
