1997 nissan sentra manual transmission wont engage

driving down the highway, car starts to slow, as i push on gas pedal, notice speedometer is responding to gas pedal (like rpm gauge) pull over, with engine running, and tranny in first, vehicle does not move, but speedometer goes up and down with push of the pedal.

have i sheared the gear that drives the spline on both axles?

heard no noises or felt no jerk ...
