If diesel is economical why is it lagging behind gasoline engines?

Because of skyrocketing gas prices I am seriously considering of buying a diesel car. But I wonder why its not as popular as gasoline engine cars. Is it just gasoline is marketed more heavily or is there something wrong with diesel engines?
