No illumination on Faceplate/Panel

My 2008 Tribeca Limited has recently lost it's illumination on the faceplate/panel for the Audio & HVAC system. Illumination is working fine on the Navigation control and the dash board.

The controls for Audio & HVAC are functional -- just no illumination. I replaced the faceplate and got the same problem so I don't think it's the faceplate itself.

Can anyone shed some light?
