2002 Cavalier 2-3 shift solenoid replacement
I have a 2002 Cavalier with a check engine light and auto-trac off light. It hits around 2600rpm @ 60mph, and about 4000rpm @ 80mph. Code is P0758, which is the 2-3 shift solenoid.
I'm not a mechanic, but I'm able to do basic stuff myself. I don't know if this qualifies. I haven't started to look at it on the car yet, but I understand that this part is on the side of the transmission, accessible by removing the front left tire. I have a couple questions before deciding to take this on myself.
Are there other possible causes (like a terminal issue)? If so, what's the easiest to tackle and rule-out first?
If I replace it, should I replace just the 2-3 solenoid, or is it always recommended to replace the 1-2 solenoid at the same time? It shifts into 2nd without issue.
Is this something a layman could reasonably expect to do? What are the potential "gotchas" to watch out for? Do I need to worry about losing transmission fluid? Or difficulties reassembling correctly? Anything like that?
