Ken, could you provide a little info on your Lojack alarm? Features, installation, experience with it, etc? (sorry if maybe you have done this in the past). I would appreciate any information you could provide. Thanks.

    Gene

Hey, up here in Harrisburg, PA the building I work in has a nesting pair of peregrine falcons. We have live video feeds from several angles. One camera angle looks down on my parking lot across the street where I can see my Pro. I wonder if this would qualify as some kind of passive alarm?

I own a 96 Protege DX, I'm jealous of all the 2001 owners. I have 53,000 miles on it, no problems at all. I owned a 91 Protege and put 80,000 miles on it, the car was flawless. My next car will also be a Protege, probably a 2002. How many people can say they will have owned all 3 models? My wife is getting her MPV first though:(

I've posted a few notes to the main Protege site in the last week - didn't realize this one existed. I'm Greg and my wife is Kelley - the proud new parents of a 2001 PRO ES white 5 speed. We live in Sumner,Wa. - near Seattle. She works for United Airlines and myself for a bus manufacturer. Hope we can fit in and meet some new friends.....I purchased some CISCO stock about a year ago and will use my profits for the initiation fee - will check my balance tomorrow!! Thanks for letting us intrude your domain!! Greg

Well, better late than not at all!

My name's Rick Sparrow and I write from sunny but cool Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. I'm a computer technician for one of the school districts in the area. I do a lot of driving so I'm glad I have my "Grace Green" 99 Protege SE (same as the 99 LX in the US). It has only 24,000 km so far and no problems whatsoever, and it's been great on gas, so as much as I lust after the '01 ES I'll probably wait another year... The only "mods" I have are aftermarket powerlocks and keyless entry, and a remote starter which was great to have over the winter!

Looking forward to trying out the Protege5 this summer!

Just a couple of more weeks and you will be writing from sunny but,...WARM Edmonton!!!

    Hi!

My name is Jim and I live in Jamestown, NC. I owned a 1981 Mazda GLC, the Special Edition model that year in Silver with black houndstooth interior, it was a hatchback. 5-speed. Ran great for four years, only problem was the heater didn't work and it couldn't be fixed. Boy! Was it cold at five below zero and zooming just made it colder.

I'm a graphic designer, self-employed, and also do media advertising for clients. Won't give my age, but that GLC should give you an idea.

I'm now trying to sell my Honda Odyssey so I can buy a 2001 Pro. Looking forward to zooming with all the Pro owners here.

Hi, I have a 97 lx protege with 79000 miles. I had a couple jobs with a lot of driving, 35K miles per year. What a great little car. I can't seem to find out why the airbag light flashes 7 times, then pauses for a second and then flashes again for 1.5 years. Sometimes it goes away but always comes back.

The coolest feature of the protege is this... I have had to replace my dishwasher 5 times in three years. We have super hard water. Dishwashers fit in the trunk just right. Well, they hang out a little, but I tie it in with lots of rope. Just slide the box in, tie it to the hinges and off we go!

Do the newer pros get good gas mileage? Mine gets about 32 on my way to work, about 20mi of stop and go, but on the highway I get 41. On a trip from Chicago to Detroit I got 44mpg at 75 mph. I can go 350 miles before worrying about filling up.

I want to find another 97 if the new ones are not as fuel efficient.
  • nikecarnikecar Member Posts: 460
Well Our 00 ES gets around 25-26MPG city.. we got only 27 the only time we hit the highway but with a full load and I was flying (sprints of 100MPH).. will be taking a long HW trip Friday with me and the misses only so I hope it goes up since I won't be testing it to the limits this time...

    Flashing Air Bag Light?

I wouldn't wait until you get in an accident to see if your air bag is still working. I suggest having a dealer check that out for you. Air bag repairs get costly beyond the 5yr/60k warranty on the restraint systems but can you put a price tag on life?

    :)

    BLARG1 i get 30 mpg,i have a 00 ES,i drive 75% highway
  • pcalvinpcalvin Member Posts: 44
Blarg1, I get around 25 mpg (22-28) with my 01ES. That's about 75% highway. However I am NOT light on the gas. I just passed 3000 miles, time for my oil change, and my Baby almost never does under 80 if the passing lanes are clear.
I almost always use Chevron 87. BTW has anyone seen a difference in mpg between the "better" gas companies? i.e. Chevron, Texaco, Mobil, Shell. Not counting the "winter gas" problem. I live in San Diego, so I don't have to worry about that like I did when living in Wisconsin!
  • groharlemgroharlem Member Posts: 59
heh, my 93 LX (the one pictured above) gets around 27mpg's on average. My all time lo is like 23.8, and hi is like 30.2. But normally, highway is 28.7, and pure city is 25.4.

I'm surprised the newer ones get the same mileage. I thought my mileage sucked.
  • jstandeferjstandefer Member Posts: 805
Cool, another San Diego Pro driver! I always use Arco 87. I have tried Shell, but got terrible mileage and a rough idle. I don't notice any difference between Chevron, Texaco, Mobil, or Arco, except that Arco is typically ALOT cheaper than those other brands... so I stick with Arco. The one downtown is generally pretty cheap, and so is the one on Texas and El Cajon.

And you may have to fight me for those passing lanes :P !!!!
  • chikoochikoo Member Posts: 3,008
texaco gas STINKS up here in PA in my ES. used it twice...never again :)

Jerry, What color is your Pro? I think There is a employee of Hine Mazda living in my Apt. Building. There is always two Mazda's parked side by side a 00 626 and a 00 Pro both with Hine Plate holders.

Jerry's Protege ES is Classic Red.
  • yetiraceryetiracer Member Posts: 6
pcalvin and jstandefer, I test drove the LS 2.0 AUTO then the 5-SPEED at Hine this past weekend.
I currently drive a 5000lb. SUV PIG! and I'm seriously considering the Protege. Do you have auto's?
the only reason I would consider the auto is the I-5, 805 MERGE if ya know what I mean. Cush is closer to me, but I prefer the gang down at Hine. Any positive comments about the dealer?
  • maltbmaltb Member Posts: 3,572
Hine has an excellent record for employee retention which translates to knowledgeable and freindly service. Cush, well if you live in Escondildo, then they are close by.

    :)
  • pcalvinpcalvin Member Posts: 44
    Steve,
I'm not a fan of shifting in bad traffic either, but I couldn't in good conscious get an auto. I'm still young and foolish, and ever since I drove my first '88 RX-7 turbo I HAD to have a Mazda of my own with a manual. The Pro isn't quite the same, but It's close enough for me! Now that I think of it, I've never even driven a Mazda with an Auto ever.
Oh, and maltb, what have you heard about Westcott Mazda in National City?
  • maltbmaltb Member Posts: 3,572
Maybe I should be a bit nicer.
Ok, something nice to say... they have a good location on the Mile of Cars but other than that, not much else.

    Hello everyone,

I am Wade and own a 2000 Protege ES. I purchased it new last July and have already put over 36K miles on it. My wife Michelle, is currently looking at the 2001 ES. The dealership didn't have the silver with a roof, so they had one put in. Lifetime warranty on the roof as long as we have it annually inspected. We live in South Carolina, so we get a lot of warm weather to cruise with the windows down and the roof open wide. There are a lot of Proteges here. I have probably seen 20 or so in the last few weeks.

We hope to be able to hear about other Protege experiences and pass along ours as well.
  • protegextwoprotegextwo Member Posts: 1,265
Wade, if you don't get the wifey that 2001 Pro-ES she will always want to drive your Protege, lol! ;-) Just ask Greg J. his user name is "notminehers".

Way to go...I figure if just one more couple gets his and her PRO's, I may be able to convince my wife that a PRO of my own would be just perfect. Do you know how many tasks in the "honey-do" jar have to be completed before I get the honor of getting behind the wheel for spin!!?? Protegextwo gave me some hope, now put me over the top!! Happy cruisin.....Greg
  • jstandeferjstandefer Member Posts: 805
pcalvin... just look for a bright red blur with tinted windows, mudflaps, and a stupid "Powered by Mazda" sticker (which I'm ready to take off and replace with my Zoom Zoom stickers) and you will have seen me.

yetiracer... Hine Mazda is an excellent dealership with a terrific selection. I always refer everyone to Tom Lopez, who sold me my car and I recently sent topazmoon to buy her new '01 Millenium Red LX2 from him. Cush Mazda isn't bad... they have a really nice parts boutique. Westcott Mazda?? Stay away from them! They're newspaper ads look very tempting, but what they lose on the car itself, they more than make up for on trade-ins, finance rates, extended warranties, paint & interior protection, and your satisfaction and time! What worries me especially about them is that they have used cars in their showroom while the new Mazda's are in the back...

And yes, the 5-805 merge sucks!!! I'm sorry you have to go through that! The automatic is just fine in the Pro, particularly with the 2.0. I would say drive both the 5-spd and auto... the 5-spd wouldn't be that great in traffic, but you'll be missing it when the road opens up!! Good luck and feel free to contact me regarding a car you're looking for. I can always "search" the Hine inventory and see what they can get and give you their exact pricing and what not!! Good Luck!!

The communicative steering is one of the best things about owning a Mazda. The Protege is one of those cars, that you really feel a part of when your passing those lumbering tractor trailers and other left lane bandits. I really enjoy commuting my 60 mile round trip on Route 283, a mug of hot coffee and Jimmy Buffet or Bob Marley, playing in the CD player. "We Jammin, Jammin, hope you like Jammin too!" I get off the highway as I near home and open the moon roof and let the smells of spring invade the cabin. The balanced chassis and nice power delivery allow you to zoom through the corners without fear. "Wasted away in Margaritaville, searchin for the lost shaker of salt, some people say there's a woman to blame... but I know it's my own damn fault". Well, with that smooth power, precise steering and that inspiring road feel, I can't help but to enjoy the warm spring weather. Watch out you left lane bandits, you are about to get zoomed!!! Spring is in the air and my PRO-ES is hitting the road.

    Respectfully;
    Larry

Hi, I'm a big fan of the smaller Mazdas. I've been lurking for the past couple months and finally decided to join the fun.

I have an '89 323LX and a '99 ProLX. Both are bright red with a dark grey interior. Both also have white sport stripes (dealer installed; they didn't charge me and I didn't feel like taking them off). Guess I'm in a rut. :)

I don't take out the 323 much unless it's a sunny day (when I can open the sunroof) or a very wet day (the Michelin X-Metrics are much better in the wet than the factory Bridgestone FR680s).

I'm glad to see that Mazda marketing has finally hit a chord with people. I'm always glad to see more Pros out there (especially red ones)! If you see a red 99 ProLX or an 89 323LX with white stripes around Cincinnati, wave! I'm sure to wave back. :)

Is anyone out nearing the end of your lease, or maybe even not that close to the end, but are already getting offers to buy the vehicle from the lessor? It doesn't matter if you plan to take the offer or not. Does this describe your situation? If so, please post your story in our discussion Talk to the Press, or respond directly to Jeannine Fallon, our PR Director at Edmunds jfallon@Edmunds.com. As always, your identity will be protected at your request.

    Thanks much!

Hi everyone. I'm new to this site courtesy of a friend...I'm a Protege owner since Aug 1993 when I turned 16. I'm still driving the same little 93 DX but this summer I'm trading it in for an upgraded Protege. Looking at the 2001 ES- I am reading good things. However, I've never had to buy a car, and I have to go it alone. I may have to bring my brother-in-law to be sure I don't get screwed.
One question: How different is the LX 2.0 from the ES 2.0? Besides the interior and brakes? Which is the better purchase?
Thanks for any and all help!!!!
  • protegextwoprotegextwo Member Posts: 1,265
You will never "ever" regret purchasing a 2001 Mazda Protege ES 2.0L. The best small econo-sports sedan for the buck. My opinion. spend the extra cash for the ES. I have two 2000 Pro-ES's and love the cars. BTW the LX is an awesome car also. Welcome aboard!

Okay...the Protege club has been going for awhile now....any nominations for a community leader? It's not difficult and about the only thing we ask is that the CL(s) come to the weekly chat. So it might be a good idea to have at least two people interested.

    Let me know!

Hi! moderator_dee here from the mazda protege owners club chat every Thursday at 6PM PST/9PM EST.

just wanted to say it has been great seeing so many of you frequent board posters in the chat. i know some of you have been experiencing difficulties getting into the chats perhaps due to a glitch with the HTML/Java chat settings.

I am told it has been fixed so all you regulars: vocus, protegex2, newcar31 and all you others can make like bob barker and "come on down". as karen noted above, we sure could use a community leader - you are a fun group of people to chat with. Also, if you are using AOL, the "realtime" java-enabled chat may work better if you use the Internet Explorer browser outside of the AOL environment.

that's all. i hope to see some of your friendly faces in there next thursday evening! :)

ps: per karen's announcement, it looks like they are going to start posting logs of your chat every week like some of you have been requesting. :)

Now that I am an actual owner, let me introduce myself a little more fully. My name is Nomi, and I am an actuary for a large life insurance company here in Toronto. As mentioned before, I am a lot older than many of you (particularly those to whom the P5 is aimed) but I liked the idea of the car and I liked the car.

I have always liked bright colours (although not necessarily in cars) and the classic red absolutely called to me. There are so-o-o many silver cars on the roads here, and I wanted to stand out in the crowd. (The yellow reminds me of the colour of Toronto police cars when I was growing up, and I could never imagine driving that.) Well, this red car will definitely stand out.

Tomorrow I take it out on the highway for the first time. I'll keep people posted with my experiences (at least from time to time).

I'm with Victor, but I will boldly make a change prediction:

The Owners Maunual will say 2002 instead of 2001.

Owners help me out here,I just started researching the Proteges for a potentional purchase.

When did the 2001's come out? Is this one of those mid-year intro cars?, I guess I am assuming they have been out since 9-00 and the 2002's would be 9-01.

I don't want to purchase a 2001 and a month later there are some changes to the new model I wish I had.
