2007 Kia Amanti
I just spent the better part of the past half hour enjoying viewing the pictures of what will be the new 2007 Amanti in North America. The site is Korean so you'll want to decline the installation of the Korean type set and just click on the characters to the left of the main image. Take them in turn and you'll get pictures of the exterior, interior, mechanical features, and so on. I swear that this is going to be my next car, provided they've got a colour I can live with. They've kept all the room, height, and ease of entry of my current Amanti while making it look a lot sleeker. I really like the grille and taillight changes. Of course, it's called the Opirus in other markets but will likely retain its Amanti name here. Just go to the following and wait for the various flash video files to download. I'll be really interested in hearing your reactions to this new car.

See a dual exhaust system.
more color options on the leather interior.
3 engines a 3.8, 3.3 and what looks like a 2.7 diesel
in the grill right below the oprius badge are 2 cameras that look to the sides to see around corners, really nice when you want to turn and that big truck pulls up beside you blocking the view.
See navigation system that everyone said that they wanted.
Don't really care for what they did with the tail lights, looks too much like a chrysler.
When I see these photos, I feel I would buy another one, BUT it would have to have many of the features shown. In my opinion, if Kia wants to compete successfully in the U.S., it should offer Navigation, Bluetooth, HID, etc. and most of the bells and whistles that are available in Korea.
For some reason, no Korean car offers these pretty common features.
Yes, they have focused on safety and that is terrific. But a lot of consumers like these other goodies, too. If another auto offers these, I believe that will influence the final purchase. It affected mine!
I really like the new Amanti a lot and look forward to seeing lots of them on the road -maybe with me behind the wheel of one of them!

Most of you know it's called Opirus over there. It's a nice freshening of the original vehicle. Hopefully things like tilt & telescope steering wheel, rain sensing wipers, heated and cooled seats, rear sunshade, 4 way adjustable lumbar support and maybe even power adjustable pedals will make it over the pond.
Check it out!
There are also two pretty good pictures as part of the story. They show that the grille on the Korean website apparently won't come to North America. Instead there will be a wider version of the current honeycomb grille. I doubt that the side sun curtains, reclining rear seats, and several other options available in the home market will make it over here but at least it's coming with a new engine and improved handling. The press release states that, "The new model is longer, sleeker, and lighter, has an enhanced interior with new high-tech features, and uses a larger, more powerful V6-engine. the company says it has made significant improvements to the ride, handling and safety."
I can't wait to drive it and place my order.

Look at:

I'm not sure I trust the information, though, the same article had some misinformation. For instance, they listed the Suzuki Aerio as a 2007, but it is being replaced by the SX4. (Maybe I have my information wrong!)
A bigger engine in the Amanti would be a welcome upgrade! Hope it happens soon.

Anyway, here is some information from the Paris Auto Show: http://blogs.edmunds.com/Straightline/1555
Interesting that some very significant changes--more HP, lower weight, updated suspension--are receiving little notice. Maybe that's a good thing to keep the Opirus/Amanti a "sleeper" luxury vehicle.

This machine would be perfect if I could expand trunk cargo capacity occasionally.
Looking forward to any 4-1-1. . .
Many thanx-

I test drove several cars and settled on either a Hyundai Azera or a new Amanti. I have to say that I didn't like the styling revisions of the new Amanti at first and I really did like the look and interior of the Azera but after I'd driven them both for many hours (yes, both dealers just gave me the car and told me to bring it back the next day) it was clear that the new Amanti was much quieter and had a much better ride than the Azera.
I've now put 1000 kilometres on the clock and have a couple of observations to make. The 07 Amanti is a completely different car from the 05 model. The new engine is marvellous: much more power and better fuel mileage too. The handling is much improved so there's no longer any sway on turns and no more bobbing up and down of the front end over undulations in the road. The ride is a little firmer but not enough to make it stiff. In fact, except over really broken pavement at slow speeds the new car is actually more comfortable than the old one was. And it's even quieter too.
I liked the 05 interior a lot so it's taken me a while to warm up to the new colour scheme. Mine is white with the light grey interior and instead of having the natural wood colour trim now the car has a smoked black wood colour trim. It's nice but is much more subdued. The seats have been redesigned and are softer, without the pronounced roll at the front that caused me so much trouble in the older car, and the leather is perforated.
I'm delighted with the car and have just ordered the Korean Opirus grille from my dealer. I think that's better looking than the current eggcrate design that looks for all the world like a Crown Victoria.
I'll keep you posted as I put some more miles on this car. Has anyone else driven the 07 model yet?

Anyway, the Amanti definitely seems like a very nice car, but it sure has that "GrandpaMobile" look to it like no other save for Buick. I know the '07 has the hot Azera engine in there and I plan to take it for a test drive very soon.
One note: I'm a big music fan and it's interesting to note that while the audio IS Infiniti (which means it runs circles around the mediocre BOSE systems), unlike for the Optima it will NOT play mp3-formatted discs. It is also only about 2/3 the power of the Optima version (225 vs 365w). It does look quite a bit better though--more integrated with panel. I wonder why they "skimped" on the Amanti head unit? I can guess--the 50-75 yr olds targeted have no idea what an mp3 is--and Kia probably figures 6 regular CDs is enough for them
Any comments on the Amanti sound quality from the owners?

The bad side of ESC is I have seen many young drivers going too fast on corners relying on it to keep them out of trouble.

If I end up buying the Amanti, I will order one of these! I'd like to totally re-badge the car to Opirus. We need for these guys to make available a replacement steering wheel center cover with the Opirus badge, as well as the chrome license plate surround with Opirus replacing the KIA badge. Think of all the people asking "What kind of car is THAT? What's an Opirus?"
To get to my point, I want to totally re-badge this car to the Korean-market Opirus trim. The one objection my wife had to the car was the KIA logos on the car. Kia, regrettably, has had a reputation in the U.S. for selling cheap cars. Strange that, in Korea, the Amanti is sold as the Opirus, with no Kia nomenclature on the car at all, but here Kia wants to badge it the same as it less expensive cars. Remember that Toyota felt that its image in the U.S. required that they give a totally independent name and dealership system for their top-of-the-line sedans, and came up with the Lexus badge. Well, I want my new car to have that kind of separate identity from the Kia brand.
Luckily, the folks at KoreanAutoImports.com can supply all of the exterior trim and badges to make the transformation, including the deluxe Opirus grille, and tell me that they sell a whole re-badging kit to folks like me who want a new, mysterious identity for their Amanti's. They don't, at this time, have the all the pieces necessary to completely rebadge the interior, but I'm hoping to find a solution to the steering wheel cover badge and the door sill plates. I'll be photographing the changes and will report on my progress.

The steering wheel emblem required a little extra 3M double-side sticky tape to adhere properly. I'm now waiting for the rest of the items to arrive from Korea. I may have a professional mechanic replace the license plate surround. The wheels will have to be taken off the vehicle to pop out the center caps, as far as I an tell. From what I am told, using a hot air gun or hairdryer on the "Amanti" lettering will soften the double-sided adhesive holding them on enough to lift off the letters. I'll then stick on the "GH380" chrome letters on the right-hand side of the trunk lid.
The Opirus has really cool looking sill plates with blue illumination, but I don't know of anyone who has them available yet.
