I wish I could tell you more. All I know is that the dealer had the parts manager get a part number (I wish I could tell you what that is, but I don't know) and the parts manager was able to get one from the distributor. I live in Texas so the distributor is Gulf States Toyota. When I called GST they told me the center console was a factory add-on, but my dealer could see that it was added at port. There is some major lack of communication at Toyota about this whole thing! My understanding is that the distributors hold on to those parts for some reason, the dealer couldn't tell me why. I read on another site that one person actually went to the distributor to have the center console added on. I think that because my dealer is one of the largest in Texas, he had some pull and was able to get the part. I went up the chain of command, they went up the Toyota chain of command, and it was a surprise to me when they told me they had gotten one in. I thought for sure I would be waiting months. Find out who your distributor is and call them, and keep calling Toyota (800-331-4331). Maybe if we raise a big enough noise Toyota will release the console sooner. I cannot figure out why they would build such a nice car yet not have anywhere to put things! Sorry I can't be more helpful, but I don't know what the dealer said to get the console. I know that I threatened the dealer with returning my car and reporting them to everyone I could think of, and that it was a "breach-of-contract" to have promised me a console and then not be able to deliver. I had paid for one in my original deal, and it was in writing. You have to threaten them or there is no incentive for them to do anything for you above and beyond calling Toyota and being told they can't get the part. At least we do have some legal recourse if a dealer sells a car and can't make good on the deal.

This is for "innedge" (#99) or anyone else who might be able to help. I live in Connecticut and the Toyota dealers here are asking too much for the Highlander. Even the 4 Cyl. is going for $26,000 plus. I'm getting to the point where I'll be willing to fly out to California and pay cash for one amd drive it home. What are some of the more reliable northern California dealerships "loaded with HL's"? Please let me know what kind of a deal you get and from which dealership. Thanks.

We picked up our Highlander on Monday after waiting 3 weeks for a special order Indigo Blue HL Limited. All I can say, is it is awesome! My wife loves the Indigo. After reading here, we made sure we ordered the center console, vehicle skid control, etc.

To my surprise, I actually talked them down $1500 off of MSRP. The key was to bring in a print out from kbb.com or edmunds.com. I told them that 8-10% over retail was all I was going to pay and they agreed only after I agreed to not say anything to other people? (oh well) and to refer two other customers.

The truck is a real head turner and drives fantastic. The JBL system is outstanding and the backseats are very roomy.

My wife's only complaint is that the passenger seat is not powered like the drivers. The dealer said this is by design. Strange. Oh well.

Oh yeah, I put on my Yakima roof rack from our Subaru and it actually fit!! I can now put on my bikes, etc. Funny since the Yakima web site doesn't list the Highlander yet.

Buy one and you will be very happy too!

I wanted to thank everyone who posts on Edmunds, taking the time to read all the previous posts helped me make the decision to buy a HL. It arrived at the port of Baltimore on 4/19 and I finally got the call from the dealer yesterday. I picked it up this afternoon and I love it - it's Incredibly smooth for an SUV. I wanted to post what I got on the HL and the deal I got, hopefully it will help others in the area wondering what kind of deals are out there.

    It's a Bluestone V6 4x2 NONLimited
FE, DR, PE, TO, AG, CQ, UZ, V5, RF, CF
The MSRP on it was $28,308, I got it for $25,936
    $2,372 below MSRP

    Happy Driving to everyone!!

I had been looking at the Highlander for the past several weeks, doing my CR research etc. I test drove one a week ago, briefly spoke with a salesman about availability, and got some questions answered about options. My wife and I figured we'd wait until August before we took the plunge. Well Friday (5/25) was my birthday and today (Saturday)it was raining (spoiling any plans for cooking out), so my wife and I decided to drive out to the Toyota dealer near us, and take another look at the Highlander.

To make a long story short we bought it, drove it home all within 2 hours. Wow, what a SUV (car?)!

It's a V6 AWD, Vintage Gold with FE, DR, DL, EH, SR, BE, TO, AG, CQ, HE, RF, CF. I also got body molding and a nice double accent stripe.

Oh yea, was only able to get 1250 off the MSRP. Might could of got more, but another couple had just finished test driving "my" Highlander. I actually saw them getting out...smiling!!! Highlander availability being what it is, I PANICKED!!! I said "Deal" and my sales guy went and pulled the folder, before that other couple could say "Deal" Whew! They wound up getting the Silver Highlander. That leaves the dealer with one solitary Highlander on the lot. They'll probably get above MSRP for that one :-)

    Right now, I'm Really Happy.

    I'll keep you posted....

Of course it's way too early to for me to make any meaningful comments about it, but I will keep you posted.

I also live in the bay area and am looking for an HL. Did you get a good deal and, if so where?
  • 39633963 Member Posts: 1
I had been looking at many suv's and decided on a V-6. My previous vehicle was a v-6 and my husbands is a v-8. I test drove a Mazda, Ford, even some V-4 and when I sat in the Toyota Highlander I fell in love with it!
When I was close to being ready to buy I went back to the dealership to talk about price. They wouldn't even agree with me that I had the correct invoice prices. I walked out. Then I went to a broker and got him to agree to a deal of $1000 over invoice. My husband told me to calm down because it is a big piece of metal and Toyota will make more. About a month later I phoned a different dealership and made an appointment. I told them that I had invoice and don't put the MSRP in front of me or I won't make a deal, nicely. Last week I picked up my V-6 bluestone nonlimited for $500 over invoice.
I love it. My kids love the power moon roof and the roomy seats. The ride is like an expensive car. I'm so happy with my HL and the dealership I used.

Purchase your Highlander (or any vehicle, for that matter) in the last week of any given month, and buy a vehicle that is on the lot. The reason is that dealer asset taxes are assessed on a monthly basis. So the more vehicles they have on the lot on the last day of the month, the more taxes they are assessed. Therefore, if you are buying a vehicle on their lot, and you might be willing to negotiate a tad more cash down (to get the dealer salivating) they are a lot more likely to take a deal they would not take in the early days of the month. I bought my V6 4x2 Limited (with everything) at the end of April. Sticker was 33,500 and I finally paid 29,866. That was just a bit under 6% over Edmund's invoice for all the options the vehicle had. Dealer kept trying to get me over $30K, but when I finally wrote a check for $5K (where I had been talking only $3K down) he caved-in.

This is the first so-called non-American vehicle i ever purchased. I saw it displayed at the local mall. Looked at the Rav4 first, but found it too small. I bought a mellinium silver hylander, loaded. Tried the 4 cylinder, but needed the power of the six. Fuel mileage is about 23 on the highway. I purchased mine on Mar. 27. Have about 2500 miles on it so far. Very pleased with the entire package. Wherever i go, it turns heads. I am recently retired, so i travel alot. I think toyota should pay me for all the advertising i am doing for this vehicle. smile. tony

Has anyone ever tried to replace the stock Toyota speakers? I didn't get the Limited but I plan to replace the stock audio system with Pioneer components. I had successfully removed the stock head unit and replaced it with a Pioneer one and a dash-mounted six-CD changer. However, I'm having trouble replacing the speakers because I can't figure out how to remove the door side panels. Help!
  • gwkisergwkiser Member Posts: 326
Jupps1, you might want to go over to the Toyota Highlander message board and check out messages 2384, 2386, and 2512. I saw that these members were discussing stereo mods for their HLs. Hope this helps. BTW, I suggest you post your email address (NOT your primary one) in your profile so others can contact you on the side if you desire.

    Hello Fellow Highlander owners,
I picked my HL yesterday. It is M. Silver with Charcoal leather interior. I know, even I was surprised to see the Charcoal leather interior!!! In any case I got the following deal. Please let me know what you think. I would say one thing though. Some of the options on this vehicle were not what I wanted but I was in a hurry to buy!!!

Options: HE, DR, CQ, DL, MG, PG, BO, L1, DD and SB.

    I paid (before TT&L)

    27600 + 485 destination + 150 in dealer BS!! = 28235

I have a couple of question please:

The dealer charged me $99 for PerVin which is already included in the B0 option!! Is there something I can do about it?? Also as part of the options listed on the vehicle there was "Auto head lamp" off. What does that mean? I did not notice the head lamp go off when I turned off my car and waited.

    Thanks,
    NH
  • dean2sm1dean2sm1 Member Posts: 34
I have no idea what the "BO" option is. Pervin charge sounds like a ripoff. All of the Highlanders, and many (if not all) Toyota's turn off headlights after you shut off, remove key, AND OPEN THE DRIVER'S DOOR.
  • newhlnewhl Member Posts: 5
Oh sorry. The B0 option is a post production (ripoff?) option. Here in Texas the Gulf coast distributor puts these on. It includes the following... As you can see it includes the PermaVin!!

EXTRA MILE OPTION PKG B - inc: custom pin stripe, cargo net, carpeted floor mats, rear trunk mat, RS 3200 Plus alarm system, rearview mirror w/ compass/ temp display, Extramile aluminum wheel upgrade, Permavin/ glass etching & limited warranty, roadside/ rental car assistance warranties
    Code: B0
  • dean2sm1dean2sm1 Member Posts: 34
What do they charge you for all those "goodies?"
  • gwkisergwkiser Member Posts: 326
Newhl, don't bother with the GST add-ons..that's where they try to make up some profit on the deal. Permavin is just one example. Mine was thrown in at n/c to close the deal (vehicle already had it & I refused to pay for it). I think it lists for about $100, but some insurance companies will do it for free for their clients.
Stick to your guns....don't buy the GST add-ons if you don't want them. I didn't.
    Happy shopping....
  • newhlnewhl Member Posts: 5
The MSRP for the "goodies" is $2073. But the dealer gave me a fixed price for the vehicle which I have mentioned in my original post.

On Cars.com the price for the same set of "goodies" is given as as $1893. So I don't know why the dealer /GST set the price at $2073!!

This is ther eason I have avoided buying a new Toyota all this time. They can't make a clean deal!! There is always a variety of options that you have to choose from and then they are all mixed up so that you never really know what you are paying for unless you painstakingly sort thru all the mess!!!! Then the car sales person jumps in and adds to the murk!!

If you have the auto light feature turned on after you open the door they will go off or atleast mine does.
  • novice11novice11 Member Posts: 6
The more I read from these postings the more I'm feeling sick at the price I paid for our HL, 2wd, limited, v6. Newhl, what dealer did you purchase your vehicle from, and does it have the v6 and limited upgrades. Also, at the time I bought our HL, Fred Haas Toyota, as all the Houston dealers, were selling them with a similar extra mile package. They along with Gullo Toyota would not negotiate that particular package. Back in March, I think the code was different. The one I purchased has everything but the sunroof and heated seats. I could only get them to 31,725. Only $500 off. I'm wondering if that is also because Houston was just then receiving vehicles since early February. Sounds like you are getting a fair price, depending on the options.

I cannot tell you about N. CA dealerships but, I can tell you Toyota of Longwood in Florida (Orlando area) will sell the 4 cylinder Highlander for $23,988 (the msrp is $25,832 and invoice is $23,364 which is approx. $600 over invoice. I know because I bought mine from there one week ago. Ask for the salesman Paul.
  • newhlnewhl Member Posts: 5
Hello, I got my Toy from Toyota of Irving - Irving,Texas. I do not have the limited package. I have listed the options on my vehicle in my message #113. It is V6(I forgot to mention that in #113). I
paid $30130 after TT&L(Out the door price)...

I recently purchased a forest hunter green limited edition Toyota Highlander with the works in the first week in June. I really enjoy driving around in it and it looks good too. I like all the new features in this car that makes driving a little easier and more comfortable. It is very convenient for me because I travel alot with my family. Toyota has made the perfect suv for me and my family.

Got my Highlander mid April, millennium Silver metallic, got it $2,000 off MSRP. V6 2WD, with PE, AG, CQ, HE,DL,DR,extra mile option package B.

Very nice SUV,, 22mpg city/highway driving.
Only complaint is, I heard a whistling noise on the driver's side while travelling 70-80 miles/hr.

Also, changed my speakers, added a CD changer, and amplifier, now sounds a lot better!!

With the rear seats folded down, there is over 80 cubic feet of space available. My wife and I actually laid down in the back and found that we could probably camp out in the HL. We figured we could put down an air mattress and it should work out ok. Just wondered if any of the members have used the HL for camping out and how they handled the sleeping arrangements, luggage, etc. I saw an ad on tv the other night showing a couple camping out in their suv instead of their tent which was propped up next to the vehicle. One of the reasons we are considering buying this SUV is the possibility of camping out.

Hi, I purchased my V6, 4WD, Indigo Blue Highlander 6 months ago. Very happy with it. Unfortunately, 7 weeks ago a car ran a red light into my driver side. Main impact was the wheel and lower part of the door. It was in the shop for 4 weeks, not due to the damage, but due to the delay in getting parts. Still, 7 weeks later, Toyota can not even say when they think they will be able to locate and ship a mud flap. Plus now there is a fine tremor in the steering. Probably, anyone who had not driven it before, would not even notice it. Only, complaints before the accident was that the back door is rather heavy and you have to grab the door to close it, some wind noise at around 70 mph, sometimes the brakes seem to grab. But I still love it.

I just purchaser a 4x4 limited HL (Ink Blue).

    I am disappointed that I can't get a console.

Any thoughts about console that will fit between seats(how about Lexus 300). The space is narrow.

One though--I traded in a 4 month oldy Honda Odyssey. The only think I really liked about it(I went from a Caravan to the Honda) was the center fold down table with 4 cup holders. The top part of the table is too wide.

I was thinking of buying one and replacing the top part with a narrower table that I had fabricated.
This is a lot of work. I like the HL, but the console situation is a bummer.

Anyone with a solution--please email me.

    Thank you

Congratulations on your new HL! Regarding the center console, it looks like Toyota is going to INCLUDE as standard the Japanese version of the center console for 2002 (much better looking that the US port-installed one). Because of that, there will be a few current 2001 owners who might be sellling their existing one. Keep an eye out for them. Also, somehow, you are going to have to remove the pop-out cupholders on the side of the driver's seat base. Our HL came with a console and the pop-out portion has been replace with two simple flat panels, allowing the areas to be used as map pockets. If you want to see the new standard console, you can either go to the Toyota website or you can go here:

http://clubs.yahoo.com/clubs/toyotahighlanderclub . Then go to the PHOTOS section, then KLUGER V PHOTOS.

There is no need to try to fit the RX300 console into the HL. It won't work. My brother-in-law has a 2000 model and I measure it out. It's too wide and also probably a little too long as it extends into the rear passenger's floor area.

I got my hood protector and sunroof wind deflector from toyotaguys.com
Get the Toyota brand hood protector. Well worth it and easy to install. Don;t throw away the rubber weather strip as it instructs you to, keep it and put it back on after installation.

What are the most important factors in your car-buying decisions? The Chicago Tribune is looking for a ranking of concerns such as safety, price, monthly payment, styling, quality, etc.

Please send your response to jfallon@edmunds.com, or post in Talk to the Press.

    Hi everyone,
I'm looking to replace my '93 Accord with an SUV-style car with more cargo space and AWD for our snowy winters. My priorities also include safety, reliability and a smooth (car-like) ride for long trips. I liked the 2002 Forester S+ that I test-drove, and it seems to meet our needs, but I'm so comfortable in my old Honda that nothing else feels quite right! I'm also looking into these other choices. Did any of you consider the Forester before you bought your HL? Thanks, Maddie
  • budhinckleybudhinckley Member Posts: 25
I just ordered a HL limited AWD. And I did test drive the Forester. For a 4-cylinder, it's not bad - has most if not all of the features I would want. However, (1) I'm 6'3" and it's too narrow and small in general, especially headroom, (2) no passenger room for legs (would have liked to gain 2 inches in front and 3 inches in back and had less cargo space way in back.

I guess I should have posted here earlier. We've been looking for a car (for the wife) for over two years now, actually, right after I purchased my Pathfinder. She had/has an '88 Celica GT. Has a lot of rust but still runs great. So, she wanted another Toyota (go figure :) ). We were looking at Rav 4's but I didn't like them - too ugly looking and to wimpy on the engine. Then we were told Toyota was redesigning them for 2001. Waited for the new one to come out.

When it did, we were very impressed. We test drove it, my wife (who is only 4' 9") fit in the vehicle very well, it did not seem big for her. However, I was worried about collisions, especially from the rear, as there didn't seem to be enough there. Then we heard about the Highlander coming out in spring of 2001, so we decided to wait a bit more.

Well, one look at the HL and my wife said NO WAY - far to big for her. Wouldn't even test drive it. So, it looked like the Rav 4. But I still didn't like it, so I convinced her to try a Forester Great car except for the position of the brake pedal. Her feet are so small that she couldn't just slide her foot over to the brake, she had to lift it up. There goes the Forester.

Tried a CRV, but to cheap inside. Then we heard the CRV was being redesigned for 2002. So we decided to wait on that (this may be a long story, but it took us two years to create ;) ). Then, we heard about the Land Rover Freelander. The local dealer in town got one in (it was European model) so we sat in it and checked it out (could not drive it) and we were quite impressed with the size and features being offered, but not the price (38,800 cdn for SE model, it's 42,000 for the HSE).

Soooooooo, based on all this, I convinced her to try the Highlander. After all, the AWD V6 Base model is actually a few grand cheaper than the middle of the road Freelander, and the CRV wasn't out yet. So, we drove it. That was it. First vehicle we drove that made me wish I didn't buy my Pathy (not that I regret it, it is a fine vehicle, it's just not an HL). And since the wife like Toyota to begin with, it was an easy sell.

We had sport running boards (they look real nice on the HL) along with a rear spoiler added. Then we took it to Ziebart for the 4 package deal (Sound barrier, rust proofing, protect a shine, and fabric guard), as well as 3M tape on the hood ("12) for rock chips and the like.

Expensive, but we intend on keeping the vehicle for at least as long as the Celica (13 years) so we want to keep it looking as good as it can for as long as it can, I think this vehicle deserves it!

We bought our Millenium Gold 2002 Highlander V6 AWD Limited two weeks ago. This board was a great help in making our decision. Just like everybody else here we are very happy with the car. We are still breaking it in. I will report back later more about our experiences with this great car.
    Happy HLing!

Got my Highlander 8/01, it's a great vehicle, BUT,on a bright sunny day viewing the various instrument numbers is difficult, even hazardous when driving at legal speeds of 50 to 70 mph. I have gone thru the previous 135 comments and was surprised to find no mention of this safety hazard. Do any other owners share my viewpoint? I have contacted the dealer and the Toyota corporation and they are not prepared to accept my complaint. Again, I think this is a great. vehicle and i hope there is a way to solve this problem. I have filed a vehicle owners questionaire with NHTSA .
  • wcpwcp Member Posts: 40
I also found the instruments (more so the tach meter) hard to read under bright sunlight conditions. Expecially when I am wearing sunglasses. Turning on the instrument light doesn't help. This will be on my Toyota survey. However, I never felt my driving is hazardous or my safety is jeopardized. My other gripe is the range and brightness of the headlights and foglights can be improved.
    Happy HL'ing!

There was a discussion about this on the Yahoo HL Club board a while back. In case you want to read it, go to Yahoo, Clubs, then join the Highlander Owners Club (free). I think it starts on message 1602.

    Good luck.

Just bought a sunset red pearl Limited in western North Carolina. There was no haggling with the dealer on the trade. They gave me a reasonable amount for my minivan and I got about $1,500 off the MSRP. It was the color that we wanted plus it was not overly loeaded with options. Most of the Limiteds they bring in were loaded up with leather, etc. This one stickered at $32,775 with 6 cd changer, towing prep and a couple of other things. I didn't get the window sticker from them yet so I can't be exact with what else. One of the items was the Toyo Guard, which I wouldn't have ordered, but at least they etch the vin number on the glass which helps with the insurance rates some. This dealer does NOT add any doc or other fees to the purchase order. This is the first dealer I have found in many years that does this. All the others add anywhere from $99 to $500. If you are intreseted in a Toyota in this area I would highly recommend him.

I am considering the Highlander V6 AWD but I have read that Toyota recommends premium gas.

Do you owners use premium or can regular unleaded gas be used safely? What is your experience with using regular gas?

Also, any advice on options would be appreciated.

    Thanks.

  • gwkisergwkiser Member Posts: 326
The owner's manual recommends 87 octane, which is regular unleaded. There have been many discussions as to whether or not a higher octane gasoline (1) improves engine performance and/or (2) improves gas mileage. Personally, in our 2wd V6 Limited, I have noticed a very slight improvement in engine performance (more peppy) which I attribute more to the brand of gasoline versus the grade. I usually run with regular grade and every now and then put in a tank of premium.

FYI, the HL twin Lexus RX300 also requires only regular 87 octane.

    Good luck.
  • mcmattmcmatt Member Posts: 80
I have seen dozens of posts on many boards about octane. I have also read many bits of info.

If your engine is new and/or operating at the correct temperature, compression, etc., higher octane won't burn as well and will cause some unignited gas to get sent through your catalytic converter and get fully or partially burnt up on the way out. Use recommended octane until your engine gets old and starts knocking. Then the higher octane will be slower to ignite and will probably reduce knocking. Save some money, don't pollute so much, and get minutely better gas mileage by following the designer's recommendation.

Last week, Edmunds rolled out new pricing pages. Along with this is a new "consumer ratings & reviews". This functionality lives in the "consumer opinions" area of the new vehicle detail page, and allows users to rate a vehicle on a number of different criteria (1 to 10 scale), as well as add his/her own free-form comments.

If you have some time, we would really appreciate Town Hall members writing a review of their current auto, or a favorite make/model. It takes approximately a week for your review to appear on that make/model.

If you have any questions, please let me know!

    Thanks!

My wife and I just took delivery of a bluestone with gray interior awd. It has convience.appearance, towing pkgs as well as running boards, rear spoiler, sunroof and alarm system. We love the color combo 1 of 5 in the New England region!!.It took us a while to locate the color combo and about 1 month for delivery. The dealer slipped on the delivery date on us so we negotiated another full year of the basic warranty. The car has plenty of power and room and should serve us very well for many years. The only defect was the sunglass holder broke after we got it home which the dealer will fix under warranty. I spent about 1 year and a half researching this vehicle and it was time well spent. We have been Toyota fans for many years and this car will keep us coming back to their products for a long time.

Dealer in N. W. Arkansas has a white 01 HL limited 15000 miles. Very good conditon,{couple of stains on seats, couple of cig burns on carpet, few paint chips,etc.}. Has most options, no leather, no sunroof. does have side air bags, remote entry, alarm, wood dash, electric driver seat, tow hitch, chromatic mirror,compass,inside-outside temp, 6 disc c.d. etc.Dealer wants $27,000.00with certified warranty. Is this a good deal, excellent or just o.k.? I do have a trade in. I have already negotiated about all I think they are going to budge. Thanks!

How do you figure out how many MPG you're getting? Have a 2WD 4cyl. M. Silver, with sunroof, running boards, roof racks, cargo/carpet mats, tonneau cover, net, privacy glass. $395 to lease for 4 yrs. with $2500 down. Good lease? (Plus they paid off $1084 in old car payments)

Annie - Next time you fill up the gas tank, set one of your trip odometers to zero. When you fillup again, take a note of how many gallons you put in the tank and divide that into the miles than are shown on yout trip odometer. Eg, if you put in 12.5 gal and have traveled 250 miles then you are getting 20 MPG.

carlmoorejr, I wouldnt get the 01 for that price. Even though it's a limited. I got a 02 v6 2wd out the door for 27k. Thats 27k bottom line, taxes , tag, etc all included. I just think its way too much when you can get a NON limited for in a 02 model year for the same and it will be new. Heck, i would think a limited is called a Limited because it would have most of the items you say it doesnt have.
    Buy a new one!

Introducing myself to the Highlander boards!

Bought my '01 gold limited V6 AWD ~1 year ago -- approx $1800 above invoice -- decided to snazz it up a bit so had the bottom half of the vehicle plus grille, rear spoiler, mirrors, door handles and rear door garnish painted metallic black; added fender flairs, hood protector, sunroof deflector and two additional roof rack members; and removed all exterior emblems except for the Toyota symbols to give it a distinctive, customized look. Still deciding whether to spend ~$800 to upgrade the center console to the '02 style...

What other emblems are there besides Toyota emblems? Im curious now. Anyways, I wanted to turn my toyota emblem on the front upside down, just to be different and make others look and wonder WHAT the Heck is that!!
