remote starter works only when key is near ignition

my 04 lincoln aviator's remote start stopped working. I changed battery in fob and it seems to be receiving a signal:. lights flash, horn sounds twice(as usual) and dash lights up, but it doesn't turn over unless i hold the key right next to the ignition slot.

Any ideas, short on time and money and hope i can find a quick fix
