Transmission acts like it's in neutral

We had the truck running a day ago but now when you put it in drive the transmission acts as if it's in neutral. It will rev up but goes no where. It will go in reverse. There is a tube going towards the transmission but we can't figure out where it goes. We have been told that it is the vacuum tube and we should be able to hear an air leak to determine where it goes but can't hear anything when the truck is running. Help!

    I had a similar problem that turned out to be the shift cable was damaged. When it was pointing to D on the selector the trans was actually in neutral.
