    I got my 2500HD LS, Crew Cab, 4x4, 6.0 automatic for $200 0ver invoice so I suppose it's possible

    I think it's over-priced.

Response to # 30 (folknor)- I am curious what your 5th wheel towing mileage was...? I am considering a 2500HD 8.1 for towing a 12,000lb 5th wheel. How heavy is your unit..?

    Thanks, John

I got 7.5 running 75 with head wind. On the way home got 9.1 running 65 and no wind. I pull 7000 lb 11 1/2' tall and that sure catches a lot of air. In the future I will be running about 65. Hope this helps. Happy trails to you. Dave

I expect to receive my GM Cert.in the near future.
Was wondering if anyone has purchased under the GMO plan? I see either a 2001 EX Cab 4x4 1500 LB 5.3L, or 2500HD Crew 4x4 6.0L in my future, the price differential is about $3K. I have two kids, and the real back doors on the crew would be great. If you have ordered a truck like the two listed above under the GMO plan, what sort of pricing did you get?? Thanks

Dpayne1, if you or your parents or siblings are current or retired GM employees, you are eligible for the GMO pricing. You must have your certificate signed by one of the above and present it to the dealer at closing (or ordering). Any GM employee is eligible to purchase up to 6 (six) new vehicles per year under this plan. I am not privy to mention what the percentage is, but if you have a certificate, then you already know.

IMHO, the 3/4 Crew 4x4 is a much stronger bang-for-your-buck choice. Three thousand more is nothing compared to how much more pleasure and peace of mind this choice will bring. LOL.

I have a lawn Business and was going to buy a truck. I really like the new Silverado 2500 HD but wanted to know if anyone has had any trouble wityh the older models? Is this the best truck for my money?
  • bamatundrabamatundra Member Posts: 1,583
No, the Chevs have absolutely the worst track record. If you want a 3/4 ton, I suggest you get a Ford. Check out Consumer Reports, the Chevs are really weak accoss their whole product line.

know a lot about anything HD? Don't make me laugh.

Consumer reports did their original article on the 99 version of the Silverado/Sierra. Although they liked the truck they found faults in various areas and stated them in the write up. However they have not tested the new HD series truck or commented on it. Therefore I doubt your statement.

I previously had a 1999 Silverado 1500 and turned it in for the newer 2500HD. I did this because I purchased a 36' 5th wheel and would be too much to ask for a 1/2 ton truck. My family and I enjoyed the 1500 and found little or no fault with the vehicle. Nor could we find any squeeks and rattles stated by CR in the time we owned the truck. The truck had 20k miles on it when I turned it over to the dealer.

As for the 2500HD D/A, the ride is much more different than the 1500. It feels more solid yet still car like. It is a great truck and the diesel is fun to drive.

Quad owns a HD Chev (traded in his 1/2 ton Lemonado) and he is all over the Tundra topics. Could it be that he knows how weak the Chev 1/2 tons really are? LOL
  • jaijayjaijay Member Posts: 162
Although I cannot speak for Quad himself, I do recall that he has a friend that owns a Tundra and he did a comparison of both trucks. This comparison was written up in the Silverado forum a while back and gave good points and bad points about both trucks. Him and his buddy traded off during a trip to the desert with their off road bikes.

Quad now owns a diesel instead of a gasser. From the sound of it he got rid of the gasser and went for the diesel for towing/pulling purposes. The diesel is much more expensive than the gas version of the HD line and would seem silly to spend that kind of money because he had problems with his 1500? That would not make sense.

If you're looking for an older Chev., I'd go with one before they came out with the new Silverado styling (pre '99)...I have a 2000 3/4 ton crew cab and have had nothing but grief...we don't have $35,000 to throw out each year to get a new one, and am very disappointed with Chevy's service and attitude. We have a '92 and never had any problems, and our '84 is still going.

    good luck

Right you are Jay! The dentist in the article who owns the Tundra, bought a Silverado LT2500HD Crew Cab with Duramax/Allison. Loves it!

I could've sworn you own the old style '00. If I'm not mistaken, your's has the 454? The newer model HD's no longer have that motor, rather the 6.0, 8.1, or duramax. That being the case, why would you recommend a pre '99 model since yours is based on the same technology?
  • jaijayjaijay Member Posts: 162
Now quad, how about the story with the softball game and the girl friend that got drunk and started dancing on the hood of a car...
  • cspauldingcspaulding Member Posts: 159
I understood the question stating whether anyone would recommend the older Chevys for reliability. I, personally, would wait a few years to get the "bugs" out of the new style/motor...thus our reason for purchasing the 2000 w/ the 454. However, Chevy swears it is not the same motor (a '99 454 cannot be compared to it and was putting out more hp than our 2000).

My point being, prior to all of chevy's changes (with the '99 Silverado, and various different motors) we didn't have a problem with Chevy. Also, as Chevy showed us, they no longer stand behind their product...as we are still driving a piece of #$&_!

To each his/her own...this is my opinion!!!

I went to my local Chevy Dealership here in NM, and I had one of the salespeople build me a 2001/2002 silverado extended cab, sport side fully loaded. He said that he would sell me the 2001 for 100 over invoice, and if I wanted to wait I could get the 2002 at the same deal, but I would have to wait because the prices for 2002 have not come out yet. I am just wondering if this is a good deal or should I try and get it lower?

    Just thought you should know...

  • cspauldingcspaulding Member Posts: 159
I realize they have had the same 454's, but obviously Chevy differs...another reason they are trying to pull to not fix mine properly...no engine should have new lifters, valve seats, and cylinder at 14,000 miles...and no one should have to go through 6 months of #@%) to get them to do that much!

I have lost all faith in Chevy, and what they tell their service depts. to tell customers...especially if they are women. I have never had a problem dealing with my pickups (including getting my set ups on my 400 sb Chevy motor) before, but the lines I've heard in one year after buying our 2000 chev. have beat them all! They tell me one thing and I let my husband call them on it and they tell him something totally different.

Chevy has told us we cannot compare a 454 that was in a '99 K2500 crew cab set up with 373s to ours, nor can we compare a 2000 K2500 w/ 410s...they have now told us we have to find the exact truck as ours to compare to. At least here in Wisconsin 454s are hard enough to find, but paired with the 373s, near impossible.

they would tell you that the mileage has to be the same. I thought this dealer was a friend of a friend? or a friend of a relative? Filed with BBB yet?

Anyone have any experiences or any comments about the difference with plowing with a Chevy 1500 or a 2500 other than the trans. cooler offered on a 2500. Planning on buying an '01 or an '02 1500 or 2500 and will be using it for plowing and some towing. Have boat on dock so it's mostly for plowing and my chevy s-10 handles the 5000lb towing.

    Chris,

Have your dealer replace the crankshaft positioning sensor on your 454. The part is inexpensive and the job only takes 20 minutes. A faulty sensor can make the computer set the wrong ignition advance timing, putting stress on the entire engine, as well as robbing power.

The result on my wife's Blazer was remarkable. It is considerably peppier now.

The TSB for this (I don't think it mentions the 454) is from June 00. I'll try to find the number and post it on my site: www.gearheadsanonymous.com.

Thanks, I will try to get the dealership to do it under warranty - only have 19000 on truck.

Even if they won't do it, you might want to do it yourself. I think the sensor is about $4, and the tech replaced it on the Blazer in the entry bay of the service department. He didn't even jack it up.

If you want to do it yourself I'll look up the procedure for the 5.3l and post it to you. I have the shop manuals.
