Bluetooth Problems

I have a 2013 X5. Originally when I bought the car the bluetooth worked well, and even showed me my emails and text messages. Until about 6 months into the buy when an update to the car software occured. I have an Android, not an iPhone and I am being told by BMW that all iPhones work but only some Androids work. Seems silly since as of 2013 Androids over took iPhones on new phone purchases, but I digress. BMW tells me I need to upgrade to a specific OS on my phone but the upgrade they call for doesn't exist per me phone carrier and phone maker company (BMW calls for a v12 when the highest is v9, which I am on). I can't really switch phones because it is a work phone and yet BMW doesn't really seem to care that a software upgrade they made rendered my handfree useless. Anyone have the same issue? Were you able to resolve it? If so, how? I have a Droid Razr Max phone.
