Internal Transfer Case - Ford Explorer

I have a '97 Ford Explorer with 77,000 miles. While coming back from a trip the engine started making a noise like something was breaking loose and spinning when you would let off the gas. The Ford dealership checked it out and found that it was internal parts that make up the transfer case (input shaft gear, shift fork, etc.) This repair is going to cost me $950.00. Has anyone else had this problem and did Ford help them with good will warranties? Any input would be appreciated.
