ignition problem - dead Jeep

This morning (27 degrees) my Jeep was dead as a doornail - no click when the key turned - no guages - nada. I remembered something I had been told to do when I had a problem (in summer) with a 1990 Jeep I had. I pumped the brakes and the car started like nothing was wrong. However, the computer had reset everything. My trip odometer was off, the clock had reverted to 12:00, my CD disc had lost its place, and the temperature settings had changed. My questions are: what does the brake have to do with the ignition and IF the car had been locked prior to the incident, could I have gotten in? Now, I'm afraid to lock my car.
