Saturn ION ignition key won't turn.

How do I get my key cylinder out of its housing if I can't turn the key to align the release holes with the release buttons? Have tried disassembling the steering col to remove the cartridge housing but it's being held back because of something coming out from where the key cartridge is. I can see movement of the obstruction when I jiggle the key. Does this mean I have to run a 1/2 inch drill into the key slot?
