Ford Explorer Sport Trac Engine Concern

In checking for engine temp issues, I slowing raised engine rpm to about 300 and the engine started missing / cutting out pretty bad, One other posting mentioned this issue on 2003 Sport Trac, but I didn't see an answer. Any ideas or suggestions for further checks.
