2005 Prius won't start

I am babysitting a 2005 prius for some friends for a couple of years starting last fall. I start it once a month, but this got more difficult as snow and cold required plowing and jumpstarting. I just replaced the 12V battery, which was dead, but it still won't start. When I insert the key, step on the brake and push the start button, it flashes red/orange not green. The second time I the start button the check engine light and park button both flash for a split second then nothing. All connection are tight and correct. No fuses blown, as far as I can tell. Any ideas?

Try a "reboot" by disconnecting the 12v battery as suggested in this forums post.
