Rust is probably the biggest problem with both models, though it's not mechanical. Toyota redesigned its pickups in 1988; those models and the Tacomas are much more rust-resistant than the 87 and earlier models.

The first-generation S-10s was also awful for rust; the newer ones are much better (the redesign took place sometime in the early 90s; don't remember the year).

S10 fan, to compare chev.S10's I/us' reliability with Toyota I/us' is a joke! S10's have no reliability and Toyota's have high reliability! In 10 years my S10 has had almost the complete drive train replaced in 100K miles of highway driving ,3 clutches and the steering box rebuilt 13 times under warranty and replaced once because of major oil leaks. The Toyota in the same 100K miles only had one clutch master cyl. replaced. Don't take other people's advices, read Consumers Report April issue, which is the car issue. Toyota truck's are rated better than average and Chev. S10 is rated much worse than average!

Eneth! You were close. Toyota re designed the pickup in 1989 not 1988. The 1988 model was the last of the old body style.

When someone enters a post and clicks on "Post My Message" your system automatically makes the person have to take time to correct your spelling checker. This should be eliminated especially when it is always incorrect! It questions words like "Toyota" a manufacturer and"Eneth" the person's user name. The checker should be there as a option for the poster, not something that pops up as soon as you post your message! Why do you have a "Check Spelling" button when your system as I said before does it automatically!

hmmmm, the spell check is optional for me. Maybe you should ask your question in New Software! Your Questions Answered.... Thanks.

You read as though you are going into cardiac arrest at the keyboard! Please before you make your next post take a couple valume, or prozak will ya.

Toyota may have redsigned the truck for the 89 model year, but when did you first see them on the road? I think the correct answer is 1988! So Eneth's assumption is partially correct.

Your post runs the S-10 into the ground but in your profile you state you LOVE all 3 of your vehicles. Sounds a little strange to me, or maybe just hypocritical. 3 clutches and the steering gear box is hardly the whole drive train, regardless of how many times you rebuilt. them. How many time did that little truck stick you on the side of the road some place? My guess is none. If it is such an awful truck I would have gotten rid of it long before 100K miles, or 10 years of service. If the only problem you have had on your Toyota was the bad clutch master cyl., them why did you post on the other pickup topic you have a problem with a clunk in the truck when shifting from 4th to 5th gear?! One other thing you mentioned was the very low mileage on the Toyota Tacoma, in my experience the clutch master rarely goes bad. I have seen many a truck and car with the original unit pushing 150K - 200K miles on it. So your reliability issue is not even truly based on your own personal experience.

When I go to post, under the box I type in there is a "post My Message" button and a "Check Spelling" button. I can't explain what is going on over there, maybe check your profile preferences and see if you selected auto spell check. I did that on my mail program by accident.
