Mazda3 and Golf Test Drive

Today I test drove a used current-gen Golf TDI and a new 2014 Mazda3 i Touring. Between the two, the Golf has more storage space and marginally more headroom, but the Mazda had vastly superior handling, to me. Steering, Turning in particular, was simply a joy while the Golf felt a little finnicky and liked to wander a bit at high speed.

One thing about the mazda that worried me, however... I was unable to get it to play music via USB from my Nexus 5 or my friend's Moto X. I didn't try bluetooth music, so I am not sure if it is compatible. Bluetooth hands-free calling, however, worked very well.

Does anyone know how to get the music feature working properly on my smartphone? I'm strongly leaning toward getting a Mazda3, but I'd hate to have to use AUX for music when USB would be safer.
