Ford Ranger AC 2.5L 5 speed problem

AC is a little over full. Had AC turned on to max and fan on but no cold air at all. Clutch does not come on at all except one time when I was trying to put more freon in not realizing that it was full already from what the gauge read. I though it was out because was not getting cold air. Was told it might be the drier bad from someone but don't want to replace drier and it is something else. Anyone with any experience in this problem that might confirm that is it the drier? Could it be something else? I am an older feller on a fixed income and it is getting hot here in Florida. Please help me if you can! Thanks!!! :o
