Odometer Light. Buick LaCrosse

We bought this car used a few years ago. After a couple of years the odometer area, which includes the compass, trip miles, etc, stopped light up. Once in a random blue moon it will be fully lit for a couple of minutes, but then will quickly change to either an extremely dim light, or more frequently, no light whatsoever so that none of those readings are visible. I took it to a dealer to see if he had any idea of an easily corrected problem, but he could only offer to do the full diagnostic test. I didn't want to spend the money then for something I could live with, but I'm getting ready to sell the car and need to get this corrected. I would appreciate any ideas.
