Looks like it's the new design direction Toyota is going in for their redesigned cars (taking after the Lexus front ends). The new 2014 4Runner is a bit similar, but doesn't have quite the same gaping maw, but plenty of "mesh".

Beautiful, I love the leering eyes and gaping maw. Timeless and elegant, these will go down as perfect designs.
Gaping maw indeed. If this is Toyota's new design direction, I'll be going in a different direction.
