GMC Jimmy Lighting

I have a 2000 GMC Jimmy with electric start. If I start it with the electric start all the lights on the dash come on. When I press down on the brake all the dash lights go off and stay off. If I start it with the key they don't come on. The radio and the temperature light work off and on. All the other lights work. I tried grounding it from the battery and but no change. I took it to a shop to have the 4 wheel fixed and asked them to look at it, they had no idea and said if I brought it in again they might could fix it. I don't really have another four hundred to sink into it. If someone could give me an idea I would really appreciate it.

    I have a similar problem with my Chevy Blazer 98: when I hit the brake the temperature light goes off, I have to turn the headlights on and off to turn it back on.
