Olds Aurora dash lights and center console lights not turning on when dark out

When the night time running lights come on the dash and center console lights stop working except for blinkers and warning lights on the dash. The climate control lights will work but they are really dim and it is only climate selection light. The radio LCD is really dim but does not show time or channel just the back light. I have moved the dimmer switch up and down, but that did nothing. I believe when the head lights turn off in the daytime the interior lights start working again.
A fix that was working was to hit the dash above the message display and the lights would come on, but that no longer works.
