Nissan Altima acceleration problem

Hello I was wondering if you guys could help me out the other day I drove approximately an hour and a half away from home which to this day was the farthest I've driven my car it was really hot out and I was on the freeway I was trying to accelerate andwhen I stepped on the gas pedal nothing happened it wouldn't go any faster than 20MPH does anyone know what could have had happened it only did that once that day I don't ever go far my work commute is less then 3 miles each day..and what would an approximate cost to get this fixed be
