94 Ford Ranger v6 4x4 automatic transmission problem

Shifting from P R N D it pops in really hard making a clunking noise threw the rear of the truck. Driving it seems to be fine no problems just shifting in and out of PNRD. Any one have any idea why this might be?

    If it's just the action of the physical shifter, it's likely the shift linkage is out of adjustment somewhere between the shifter and the transmission. A good mechanic can get that tightened pretty quickly.
