Toyota Tacoma cruise control

I have a '99 Tacoma (2.4 ltr 4 cyl.) with cruise. The cruise often takes as long as 4 or 5 seconds to engage, which, by this time, the truck has slowed by nearly 10 mph. If that isn't annoying enough, the cruise surges by as much as 3 or 4 mph, which is quite noticeable, and very, very annoying! Naturally, the local Toy dealership says nothing is wrong with it (I wonder if they'd say the same thing once it goes out of warranty?). I asked them why then does the cruise in the one '00 Tacoma I test drove not do this? Answer - a bunch of double speak. What makes this situation all the more aggravating is the fact the cruise doesn't act up like this all the time, but darn near all the time. Has anyone got any information or advice to offer?

Hum...I don't think I've heard that one before. 2.7 you say? I assume you are doing this on the freeway/expressway. Is there a difference with the AC on/off? Have you upgraded the tire size?

All the regular maintenance kept up? Has it done this from the beginning or is this something new?

When you test drove, did you test drive the same truck, tranny and engine?

Sorry for all the questions but I'm trying to think what I would look at. Maybe you should take a look at the Edmunds Townhall Maitenance section. Might be something there.

Any other '99 Taco's out there with the 2.7?

I have a '99 Taco ext cab 4x4 with the TRD package. The cruise control is one of the best I've ever driven. Very precise, doesn't fluctuate at all. Accelerates and deaccelerates in perfect 1-2 mile increments with each tap of the switch up or down. Wife's Corolla is the same.
Take it back and tell them it is not right!

I purchased the truck with 5,900 miles. It now has 30,000 - no mods, all stock, including original tires. It has A/T, 2WD and the 2.4 ltr. 4 cyl. I noticed the cruise acting like this from the very first time I used it. I could kick myself for not thinking to use it when I test drove the vehicle! Live and learn! Anyway, I've asked the local Toy dealership to check it 3 times. Each time they say "no malfunction detected."

Why don't you try posting this problem in the "Tacoma Problems" thread (it's about half way down the list).

Someone may have some thoughts on this...
