Here's a short list of things we couldn't care less about: Camilla Parker-Bowles' wedding dress, Lifetime's movie of the week, Ashlee Simpson's latest single, low carbs and used minivans. On the other hand, Teri Hatcher, Speed TV and German sports cars are on our hits list.

    Hi Brian,
I think you may have exaggerated just a little on how much better the 350 is than the 320 could ever hope to be. There is one little SLK that got it's wish and is called the SLK32 AMG. It accelerates from 0-60 in less the 5 seconds, which trumps your 10 times better SLK350. In the handling department, my guess is the 32 Amg would give the Sport suspension 350 a pretty good run for it's money. If someone is looking for a sleeper, the older AMG wins hands down. Many drivers do not know what the AMG on the trunk lid means and have been embbarrased by the 349hp compressor engine. The sleeper affect of the older front end, fools them into thinking the most hp this toy could have is 270. Wrong!!! Even the 2005 AMG version of the SLK is only slightly quicker to 60 and through the quarter mile. There is no doubt, however, that the 30 or so pounds of extra torque in the 2005 will win any roll on contest between the 2004 and the 2005 AMG.
As to the moving plastic shelf that you seem to imply is something new, I beg to differ; From the moment the power hard top was installed, MB also installed the moving shelf. The purpose was to separate anything in the trunk from the roof when it is in the lowered position. The shelf acts as a guide, so owners will not over fill the trunk and possibly crush something when the roofs enters the trunk. As a matter of fact, the roof lowering mechanism will not work until the moving shelf is in the rearward position, which triggers a switch that sends power to the system.
    Respectfully,
    Jim A.

I own a 2001 SLK320 and love the vehicle. It's understated style without a line out of place or an unnecessary body detail. Acceleration is strong and creamy with a perfect exhaust tone. The five speed automatic is fine for American roads. There is a joy in the simple dash and intuitive controls plus a steering wheel with nothing on it but a horn. It's just a great package where the balance of form, power and control are ideal.
