What is electronic power steering? Mazda MX-5 Miata.

My 2013 MX-5 came with "electronic power steering" according to the Mulroney sticker. I thought it was electric power steering and something was lost in translation. It certainly is not electric power steering because there is an engine-powered hydraulic pump and a reservoir for "power steering fluid". What did I buy? How does this system work?
