I drove one of these on a round trip from Detroit to Philly last year, an AWD dverion I think (it was a rental). It was comfortable and quiet, but I never got near 30mpg, even with long stretches on the highway. 26-27 was about the best I could do. All in all though it is an CUV I could happily live with.

I've drawn Escapes from the pool a few times when renting cars the past year or two. Since the '13 redesign the Escape is a nice little CUV. It looks modern, it handles well, and it's right-sized for smaller families. It looks, though, like Ford is still having trouble meeting its EPA fuel economy estimates with its small turbo engines in real world driving.

Have been driving a 2013 Escape SE service loaner daily for two weeks: talk about a love-hate relationship! Pros: incredible performance and handling. Cons: infotainment/ IP controls are a NIGHTMARE! How does anyone drive this thing without wrecking it?! 13 buttons on the steering wheel are either unlabeled or are in places/ configurations that make no sense. A/C recirculate button turns itself on for no apparent reason; seek button for radio is the same as the answer/ hang-up button for phone; phone portion of button not illuminated at night, so it's just as easy to hang up on someone as it is to answer their call. SYNC does not like my phone's address book, as I can't get it to call anyone from it. I'd buy one of these in a heartbeat for the performance, but after two solid weeks of commuting I STILL have to pull over to the side of the road to change music tracks or the radio station? No thanks...
