2001 Chevy Blazer battery drain/shorted battery

My wife's blazer began to have issues at the beginning of the week. I went to back it up to the house, and it started very weak and would die any time I let off the gas, and eventually completely died, would not crank. Jumped it, and it seemed to run fine, but was afraid to move it in case it died en route, it was nighttime.
It drove fine for a couple of days, and then when she went to leave work on Friday, it was completely dead, though it had no issues on her way to work. Now it wont jump at all, though I did notice my jumper cables getting warm and the car I was jumping from begin to bog down.
I think the battery may have a short, which explains it being dead, and the apparently high amps it was drawing, but that doesnt explain the engine's odd behavior of dying when the gas was let go. Any ideas?

Kind of sounds like the alternator is barely keeping the battery charged enough to keep engine from dying when you let off the gas. so is it just the battery, or is charging system questionable. Hhmm
