    what's interesting is that two or three generations ago, we didn't need bumper steps. The bed's of these newer trucks are not significantly bigger. They are deeper, but not much wider or longer. Which makes me wonder why are the bumpers so much higher?

    I believe the much higher tow ratings of modern half ton trucks has led to taller suspensions and higher load levels.
