Bestseller for a Reason - 2014 Acura MDX AWD Long-Term Road Test
The latest sales numbers are in and the Acura MDX is now the best-selling, three-row SUV of all-time. After driving it for nearly a year we're not surprised.

This is the one segment where Acura understands the market better than the other luxury brands. There are families that need the utility and three rows, refuse to drive a minivan and "require" a luxury badge on the hood. BMW is still trying to infuse performance in this segment and Mercedes is ridiculously expensive. Audi's Q7 is not so useful on the interior. Lexus stubbornly hasn't offered three rows in anything that doesn't drive like a truck. A car-based, three-row CUV is exactly what most luxury SUV buyers need and very few manufacturers are giving it to them. The others are Infiniti with the JX (whatever they call it now) and Buick with the Enclave. That's it. Good for Acura being one of the first to the party and sticking with it.
It is a top selling SUV because it is cheaper than any other three row SUVs on the market (German and Japanese) and I don't consider Acura as a Luxury brand. Look at high trim level Honda Accord and Acura TL, they are exact the same! Since Infiniti has launched JX35 I think the title will be switched soon.
Have 2 households in my cul de sac with the MDX. All love it. All say the same thing. It's luxurious, it's comfortable it offers good performance, and it's trouble free.
No wonder Acura has done so well with it.
So, it's a roomier more practical vehicle for those who might also be attracted to the designer handbag-on-wheels Lexus RX. Is this a designer suitcase?
