What are the symptoms of a bad MAF sensor? Dodge Dakota pickup stalling.

my 2001 dodge dakota pickup is stalling, idles real rough, and has a blackish color to the exhaust. spark plugs have been replaced, and for some reason it runs like crap when an air filter is on. Take filter off and it seems to run better. Ever heard of this and what can i do to correct the issues?
