Fuel economy comparisons to the Honda Accord Hybrid

I am going to buy a new hybrid sedan. In comparing the various models, Honda Accord stands out in its claim of 47 MPG combined. All the others are in the 38-40 range. Basically all the same size car with 4 cylinder in lines and similar curb weight. I'm looking at Camry, Accura, Lexus, Fusion, and of course Honda. Why such much better mileage on the Accord? I read the forum article about Honda fudging the numbers, but does anyone have "real world" experience with Honda getting the claimed mileage?

I have about 13,000 miles on my 2014 Accord Hybrid Touring. My worst tank of gas was just over 43 mpg. My best was about 47.5. Mostly in-town freeway and surface street driving. I have found that high speed interstate travel will result in low 40's. If you want to drive 80 mph, the car won't be in EV mode for very long periods if at all. But at 50-65 mph it can be in EV mode for a surprising amount of time. And that's what get the mileage up. I had a 2013 Accord Sport. I was getting low 30's around town and up to 37 on the highway with that. I love the Touring model. Seems quieter than my '13 Sport. Far better audio and the dash looks richer with Navi. It feels like entry level luxury car.

We've had our 2015 Accord hybrid for a year and a half and have 20K miles on it. It is by far the best car we've ever owned. We often hit between 50 and 60 mpg in town and combined with some highway miles an average of 50 mpg is pretty common. If you drive 75 to 80 mph then you won't get mileage anywhere near this. High 30's or low 40's is what you can expect regardless of whether you use the climate control. Even after 18 months we still have fun trying to better our last mileage. On a fillup our expected range is 725 or so which obviously is based on the mileage since the last fillup. We also have a 2007 Honda Pilot with 120K miles and other than recommended maintenance we haven't had a single problem. We don't think you can go wrong buying any Honda, especially the hybrid.
