Agree that @s197gt 's comment is a possibility. It could also be true, since the new Mustang is heavier and has a couple more moving parts (IRS vs live axle).

The 2011-14 V6 Mustangs' highway mileage was rated assuming stock 2.73 rear gears. The 2015 Mustangs come with no gears numerically lower than 3.15. For a vehicle whose highway mileage was attributable almost solely to those super tall gears, such a change will naturally lower economy a bit. That's a swing of 15% in the ratio and a 10% drop in highway MPG.
