2015 Subaru Forester transmission issues

This is my 2nd Subaru...love the car...however, I am not used to the new transmission...when around 1st gear (20 MPH) it seems to stutter, or maybe shift hard...not sure how to describe it. Is this normal? Seems to have plenty of power otherwise. Seems to happen worse when the engine is cold.

My first car was a Legacy 2010 and did not have this issue. both were a 4 cylinder...
Have taken it in once to look at and they couldn't find anything wrong...said its normal.

Can anyone enlighten me on this?

Thanks

I bought a 2015 Forester Limited this summer. I have the same stutter issue at very low speeds. .. makes me wary of hitting the gas going through left turns on busy roads.

I have not yet taken it in for the 6000 mile checkup. Will ask them then. I wonder if it's a carburetor setting for high altitude, bought it from a Colorado dealer use it in Tennessee.

My understanding is this is a common issue. This may be a software issue. Maybe the dealer can do update the software. Cars haven't had carburetors for many years. I think the computer makes adjustments for altitude.

It has a CVT, so there aren't 'gears', just a computer controlling how it reacts to the gas pedal. I'd be checking with the dealer periodically for software updates, as others have mentioned.
  • I too have experienced this issue on my 2015 Forester Premium with 26K.  I would describe it as a jerky feeling as you accelerate with light to medium throttle with the RPMs around 1500-2000.  Seems to persist up to around 30-40 MPH.  Noticable more so on steeper inclines.  As of May 2018 there are no software updates according to the service department.  It is quite annoying.  Has anyone reached out to Subaru for assistance.  Maybe that will prompt a software update if enough people complain.  That is why manufacturers are trying to make CVT feel more like traditional transmissions by stepping the ratios.  Defeats the purpose in my opinion.
