2002 chevy cavalier. Check engine light and shut offs

i have a 2002 chevy cavalier. Bout two weeks ago it started over heating the engine light would come on and then the car would shut off. Since then i have changed my thermostat and the over heating stoppes. But now my engine light comes back on and the car shuts off when i put it into gear and takes forever to turn back on and immediately does it again. What is it because i am baffled.
