People tend to like that which they are used to or comfortable with. If true, and I think it is, no wonder people tend to like the shapes. If you compare today's 3, 5, and 7 Series to their original counterparts in the 1970s, the family resemblence is unmistakable. Would be nice if Japan Inc. did more to create styling consistency within the marque and across makes as well as over time.

Do you mean a Maxima should look like an Accord, which should look like a Camry, which should look like an Altima, which should look like a G35, which should look like a GS300? Hmmm. Interesting concept. I think they do that already though. :)
  • verozahlverozahl Member Posts: 574
Or: the C and E and S class Benzes should all look the same. So should the 3 and 5 and 7 Series. Also the A4 and A6 and A8.

Thankfully, the Japanese put some effort into styling more than being purely corporate. Acuras are not exactly diverging from each other (they are converging with RSX, that's for sure)... but still, better than Germans' "everything has to look the same."

I'm not sure the E class looks like a 3 series, but the fact is you can tell almost any model of BMW and Mercedes and Porche. But they don't look like one another. However, there are a lot of cross-over similiarities in for example, the GS300 to the G35 to the Altima, sort of like "designer cars"

I think what is throwing alot of people in their assessments of how "loud" a g35 is, is something I observed specifically just recently...

Several car magazines rate the G35's interior noise levels to be stellar in their quietness at 70mph, but people make claims that the engine is as loud if not louder than "car x" from their personal experience.

I'm not certain of the engineering aspects of how the G's muffler system works, but I noticed that the engine growls noticeably loudly under acceleration, but settles in and is quite subtle at speed...

I'm thinking that people hear the engine under acceleration and equate that level with the overall sound template. It is after all, a very distinctive roar :)

There was a question earlier about Mobil's recommendation of sticking with manufacturer interval regardless of driving style. On the Porsche Boxster and probably all other Porsches, Mobil 1 is standard factory fill. Oil change interval is 15,000 mile or one year. That's on a hard working high performance engine in my Boxster. The dealers I go to give me no reason to change it any more often.

As for the G35, I'm waiting for the dealers here in Houston to come off MSRP. In the meantime, I will just be tooling around in my TL.

Personally, both are very good looking cars. They have a nice wide stance and short overhangs. I see one big difference. The BMWs have such a variety of models; 325 up to the M3. Every 325 I see looks very cheap and degrades from the upper-level models. It has small, ugly rims and without the sport package, a BMW sits up too high. Meanwhile, EVERY G35 looks awesome! They all have similar stances and nice rims. A stripped G35 is much more than just a base model. The base 3-series looks cheap and not worth my money. Get real, you have to pay extra to get rims and leather. My 10 year-old, $15K Saturn has rims and leather. Same goes MB and Audi, the 1.8T A4 just doesn't look as good as the 3.0.

I heard they couldn't pay people to take the G35 off dealer lots. How many units did it sell again last month?
  • dmmattixdmmattix Member Posts: 77
2,147 units in less than 3 weeks(20 days actually). I guess they were paying folks a lot of money to get that many off the lots in such a short timeframe...

How many CTSs has Cadillac sold? I was checking the TMV here at Edmund's and the G35 TMV is still MSRP while the CTS has a fairly standard $500 discount..

I've read that Nissan is very proud of the muffler for this car. Seems it has an internal baffle that allows for a very nice rumble during acceleration but then is quite at a steady speed. I agree with your comment and love the sound that this makes under acceleration--it not only feels like a V-8 it sounds like it as well.

I bought a set of new carpet mats for my 95 4Runner. I still love the car and its great for tooling about and trips and cargo... But Now that I've been exposed to how Infiniti treats its customers, Toyota equipment is still quality, but man! there dealerships and are horrendous!

I'm posting this because as I was waiting for my mats a salesman came up to me because I was looking at a Sequoia on the showroom floor.

He gave me the slick routine that I hate and almost had that "How much can you afford per month" line going into his third sentence to me!

I told him I already bought an Infiniti G35 and I was just looking while waiting for my car mats.

He goes on to almost ridicule me by saying, I bet you paid thru the nose for the Infiniti and this Sequoia has the new IForce V-8 it has much more power and more room in the car!

I never made eye contact with him (I was looking at the engine as the hood was up) and I said casually, "Actually the G35 with a v-6 makes more horsepower than this v-8 and its in a car that weighs about 2000 lbs less..."

I waited a few more seconds to see what his response to that was, but when I looked up, he was gone!

Maybe he went on the net to see if I was telling the truth *laughing*

Toyota makes some good stuff, but Christ! Why do the salespeople I talk to all have to be so condescending and misinformed? Is it me?! am I unlucky?!

I must say that both the 3 series and 5 series were on my short list and the 3 series was my favorite test drive until I drove the G35. I was used to small sports coupes and the 3 felt the closest to the kind of car I was used to. The difference was that I had decided on an automatic with enough room in the back seat for adults this time.

I decided that a slightly used 528i would be the logical alternative, but I found the car emotionally uninvolving. It did everything right, but I found that I didn't really care. A dealer even gave me the keys and told me to go have fun. The 5 felt very businesslike and competent, but I wasn't smiling. It also wasn't my definition of luxurious inside.

I do love the look of both the 3 and the 5 series. I think that the 5 is the best looking 4 door out there. But I can't see the outside when I'm driving it.

With my G35, I get a more powerful car that handles as well as I will ever need it to, a supple suspension, plenty of room for my needs, the options that I like, all the most up-to-date safety and electronic traction control stuff, for the price of BMW's cheapest, and I still get to enjoy looking at the outsides of all the 5 series that I come across. The seats are not the most gripping, but I love the look and feel of them. I really do think that the G is a beautiful car, and most people I've shown it to agree. The rear end and flat sides have grown on me and I just plain love the front end views (I have a nice dark metallic blue one).

Since you drive an S2000 and really want a sports package, manual trans model, I doubt that you will love the G even after you drive it. The G coupe six speed will be more to your tastes. But please let us know how you like the test drive. I found that my small quibbles melted away after I experienced the acceleration and handling on my first short drive in a G35. Funny how our brains can be won over by the seat of our pants.

Well, as I mentioned in another post, my wife is back with the G35 and I get to drive it again (withdrawals...). However, I have decided to see what the best gas milage I can get is in mixed city/highway driving (~60/40). This means that I am in "Sunday driver" mode when I drive to see how much milage I can milk out of the car (I want to see that 26mpg :).

However, it is darned HARD to do. I was next to a red MB (something)420 (a smallish coupe, I think) today at a stoplight. I had glanced over at the car and thought, "Oh, nice for a MB, but who cares" and faced forward to wait for the light. When it turned green, I saw the driver glance over at me and heard/saw him punch it. On an impulse I did the same (expecting him to blow me a way with the MB's 4.2-liter engine) and by 45mph I was ahead by a car length and he gave up... LOL!!!

Trying to get good gas milage is going to be TOUGH! :) Can't wait for the next tank so I can see how LOW the mpg's will go...

The reason Toyota dealers and salesmen act that way is simply because they know they can rely on Toyota car's reputation of quality and reliability to bring people into the showroom.

Having bought four Toyotas in my family, I would have to say that my last sales experience was the final straw that broke the proverbial camel's back.

I have sworn off Toyotas - they make some damn fine cars (albeit incredible boring and uninspiring), but just about all the other car companies (particularly the Japanese) can match Toyota on quality. It may not show up now, but it will add up - their snobby dealers will have their day of reckoning. They already lost one repeat customer - me, and losing repeat customers is expensive to the bottom line.

    >>Why do the salespeople I talk to all have to be so condescending and misinformed? Is it me?! am I unlucky?!<<

That's so true of about 95% of them. They don't even know about their own cars, let alone the competition. It's not that tough.

Plan to take delivery of my Sterling silver/willow G 35 today. Options include: Premium package, Xenons, winter package, wood trim, navigation, splash gaurds. Man was this car hard to find. I had to call 10 Southeastern dealers and this was the only one in stock. They are sticking pretty much to MSRP as well. I worked very hard for what amounted to about $900 off MSRP. Final sale price before tax tag etc. 35,500. I got them to drop that rediculous 475.00 dealer proffit called "delivery charge" as well. Going tonight to pick it up. Have to drive 2 hrs away. Just hope I can keep my foot off of the floor during the break in.

I have 1,700 miles on my car now. Yesterday my trip meter said 331 miles since I last filled up the tank. I filled up with 17.588 gallons of gas.
So I got 18.81 MPG on about 70-highway/30-city driving. I did push the car pretty hard though, still hope it improves.

Sorry, the Italians have the Germans beat in car designs. Compared to Ferrari, MB BMW and Audi are only transportations. Having owned many Italian products, I can only admire their talent in coming up with aesthetically beautiful designs (cars, fashion, audio, art ......). In my opinion, the M coupe and the new 7series are plain ugly. For those who complain about the look of G35's back, I think MB C320 is even worse; just my opinion. I also don't care much for the look of A6's rear end either.

Your G35 has a certain family resemblance to the Altima. Espically from the front 3/4 view.

BLUEGUYDOTCOM/FAENOR/DANE4 - I am also amazed at a majority of car sales reps and their lack of knowledge about their products. I am also a sales rep but in the computer industry and the first thing I do before selling any of our products is learn all the details before pitching it to potential customers. How embarrassing it would be if one of my customers knows more about my products than me.

GAS MILEAGE - 18.81 MPG with 70/30 highway/city driving is really poor for a V6 vehicle this size. I know some of you will say you can't have performance and good gas mileage in the same vehicle but I disagree. Sure you won't find 30+ MPG in this class. My pops has a Acura TL-S and drives 30/70 highway/city and averages 24 MPG. He is not an ultra aggressive driver but he does push the car (enough for my wife not to like driving with him) quite often. I consider 24 MPG for mainly city driving in a 260HP high performance engine very good. I consider "18 and change" in a 260HP engine very poor. Al things aside, I like the G35 styling much, much more than the TL-S. I just hope the 6 speed manual will provide better gas mileage
  • blueguydotcomblueguydotcom Member Posts: 6,249
That's why they have different makes...some people like italian designs and others, like myself find Ferraris and Lambos boring to the extreme.
  • cdingcding Member Posts: 27
Heatmiser1: TL-S does not have the same torque as the G35 (235 vs 260). In general, more torque you have, less MPG you will get. Remember TL-S has more horse power mainly because its higher rev redline. The VTEC engine in S2000 has more horse power than most V6. You wont get that horsepower without hitting 7,000rpm or more. If you drive like ordinary people, it is just a plain I4 engine. I am not saying TL-S has the same VTEC engine, but they are similarities. I am looking forward to the 6-speed manual. Hope that will improves MPG. In the end, I don't really care about the MPG nor gas price. My bet is gas will remain cheap and President Bush will cover us (in terms of environment concerns) :-)

We're picking up our new silver G35 w/leather and sunroof tomorrow morning. Can't wait. Drove it once and loved it. This is going to be my wife's car and it will be difficult trying to get the keys away from her. I've had other Nissan/Datsun vehicles before and have never had any problems, hopefully this will not let me down.

    bluedotguy,
You must be in a minority of one if you find the Italian cars boring. I don't think I've ever heard that before.
  • neo_gtrwneo_gtrw Member Posts: 76
LOL! You must be one of the few who find Ferraris and Lambos boring. The fact is they are in a different league. There are so many BMWs and Audis on the road that I don't even give them a second look. In Europe, BMW and Audi are as common as Honda and Toyota here. The only BMW that catches my attention on the road is the M coupe, and that's due to its ugliness! Every time I see one, I'm still amazed at how anyone can design a car this ugly. The M coupe looks like that car in the Ambiguously Gay Duo cartoon on Saturday Night Live.

"others, like myself find Ferraris and Lambos boring to the extreme."
This has to be the funniest thing that I have read on this board. Still, you are entitled to your opinion.

I'm just about to hit 1K miles and last tank I got was 21.2.

That's not too bad for an engine which is still breaking in. If I drove 55mph all the time it may be bad, but I usually hit 90 at least once per day and consistently drive over 75.

neo_gtrw: The back end is my favorite view of the car. If it were on the new 550 it would be praised.
  • blueguydotcomblueguydotcom Member Posts: 6,249
The Ferraris have great engines but their designs just don't get me going. Oh well. Just think somewhere out there someone thinks his Aztek is the bomb.

The M coupe does look like the Ambiguously Gay Duo. LOL I hadn't thought of that before.

offended by a recent post - I have taken care of the situation.

If you see something like this, the thing to do is drop me an email. It doesn't do you any good to respond, because I have to remove the responses as well as the offensive post. (And honestly, it's not an easy or quick process to remove a bunch of messages!!)

Thanks to the fact that someone did email me, I got here immediately. However, I want everyone to understand that the Town Hall is not monitored in real time, and sometimes offensive posts will remain longer than anyone would like.

Anyway, it has been handled and kudos to the person who did email me!

I have been getting 22.3 for the last two tanks. My commute mostly divided open highway(about 25miles) to work and then through a small but congested town with many stoplights about 4 miles to work. I drive to lunch in the same small town and then back through it and home. I drive in the Tulsa area in the evenings. I figure I have about a 60/40 to 65/35 split highway to city driving. I don't baby the car but I don't sprint from stoplight to stoplight (but then your definition of sprinting and mine might not be the same). Prior to the last two tanks I was getting 21.3 to 21.5. I have nearly 2700 miles on the car. While not the mileage I was expecting, it is not horrible. If you are getting 16-18 mpg with much highway driving at all you should either take the car into the dealership to be checked or quit driving like maniacs. I mean Car and Driver testers are not known for their light touch of the throttle and they got a combined 19mpg. This included a few 0-60s and 1/4mile acceleration tests.

I am not really concerned with the mileage I am getting but would be if I were getting 16mpg...

Didn't mean to frighten anyone. Just falling asleep at the keyboard. I pick-up my Desert Platinum/Willow Leather G35 tomorrow. Can't wait. Haven't been this excited about a new car since my '93 Legend Coupe! No Wood Kit available yet-only an add-on (sim. wood) for pieces not included in the regular wood trim model.
WIll keep the site posted on the details of driving the car after I get it.

I have ordered a black/graphite, sunroof, Sport, Bose, Winter Pkg Sport. The dealer couldn't find a match stateside, so has "ordered" from Japan. This is supposed to take until late June or early July. As it was explained, the factory doesn't actually make a model requested, they simply make a finite number of combinations of packages, and you put your name in for the next time one "pops out". At least this is how the dealer explained to me. Does the time frame and explanation ring true? Thanks.

Had a chance to talk with a Salesguy for about an hour while looking over the G35. I am truely impressed with this car and the knowledge of the salesguy.

    Specifically Liked:

The plush seats sitting higher than my Acura Legend. The distance to the pedals while holding the steering wheel. I'm 6'0 and felt comfy, after adjusting my seat I went into the back seat and although I had to manuver in to it my knees were not hitting the front seat. I like the interior bits and find them to be ok quality wise so I don't know what the big deal is - go twist some knobs on some American cars if you want cheap hollow plastic. Wheels, size, options, colors, engine.

Didn't like: The steering wheel controls look like they are from my 1980's boombox! I really don't like the orange backlighted gauges. Blower speed via buttons? Resting elbow on door edge when driving is too high. Window switch pos's. Rear end, premium fuel, seeing a dork driving one the other day.

That is what my dealer said also. However, I wasn't willing to wait so contacted another dealer and bought a "close match" from them. I had given 4-5 different configs that we would accept. However, they ONLY checked for those (didn't care to have the winter package). When I contacted another dealer, they said, "Gee, we can't find exactly what you want, but would you accept the winter package? Otherwise, it would have to come from Japan." DUH! No brainer.

Some dealers are willing to present close matches, some aren't. I think it is an effort thing.

What's wrong with the rear end.

I may be the only one which thinks it is the best angle of the car.
  • tpell1tpell1 Member Posts: 18
I am doing the same thing for a premium, nav, wood, winter, xenon package. No one has those specs in Northern New Jersey in Twilight blue.

Different dealers have given me different info about delivery date. One dealership said that Infiniti only accepts orders at certain intervals while another said they fax it right over and then it is made. Both however did say about 6-8 weeks so hopefully that hold up and it doesn't go into July.

Anyone know if there is any rule of thumb for this stuff about whether the 6-8 week thing is there to placate us or reasonable accurate?
  • im_brentwoodim_brentwood Member Posts: 4,883
That is the funniest post I have seen in weeks.

I think it took the "Kias have the best styling of any car on the road" comments we saw over in N&V not too long ago to approach that.

    Thanks for the laugh! :)

  • stsurbrookstsurbrook Member Posts: 285
6-8 weeks is SUBSTANTIALLY faster than the times I have been quoted. I have been quoted 10-12 weeks for a special order from Japan. MAYBE they are quicker now because the demand is off and the channel is filling.

Some dealers will check for incoming vehicles that they can "swap" with other dealers. Apparently, while ear-marked for a certain dealer, until they get unloaded off the ship, they can be redirected to another dealer. They just need to swap vehicles. Can't always be done, but can be done sometimes.

No Garnet Red. I have the Desert Platinum, willow leather, premium, winter, wood combo. And no you are not the only one who likes the look from the rear. Walking up to the car in the parking lot at work the rear is the first thing you see and I am beginning to really like it. However the view from inside is by and far the best..

You live in the Tulsa area? I live in Jenks and work in Okmulgee (hence the commute description).

in the 04/22/02 issue of BusinessWeek, "Luxury Gets More Affordable"

He cmpared the CTS, G35, A4 and X-type. Granted, it's not a very 'deep' article at all, but...hey! Good press ='s more sales (???), or at least more interest!

Not sure if this link will work if you want to read the full article:

    http://www.businessweek.com/@@pFV6YmcQ1WUDoAwA/premium/content/02_16/b3779608.htm

If not, here are a couple of the highlights:

CTS: Liked the handling. Thought underpowered compared to the rest, cheap interior.

G35: His favorite, liked the power and handling and thought it was the best value of the bunch, loved the interior/leather, didn't like the seat controls though.

A4: After testing, he preferred the A6.

X-type: Enjoyed the car, but thought unusally soft brakes and thought Jag stepped too low and the X-type would have made a nice Lincoln instead.

His ending statement: "All of these entry-level luxury cars ask a big question: What's really in a name? The G35 is a better buy than the X-type, even though most people think more highly of Jaguar than Infiniti. Cadillac isn't as hip as many European marques such as Audi or BMW, but the CTS is a great driving car that dares to be different. That's why, when it comes to buying entry-level luxury cars, ignore the brand names and get the car with the best drive and most comfort".

He forgot to add "SMILES!" (VERY IMPORTANT, IMVHO)

    Allen (;>D)

  • tpell1tpell1 Member Posts: 18
I think the 6 weeks was way to quick but two different dealers said that 8 was about right but with the "you never know" line. Hopefully you are right that even without the specific car orders, they are making more that are loaded since that is where the demand is and that might make the turnaround time a little less.

keeping fingers crossed that I dont have to wait until July. Fortunately I don't see many on the road so I won't get as restless as I would if I was seeing them everyday!
