ac chevy malibu 1998

My a unit light will go off (compressor also shuts off) and comes back on by itself after a few seconds or a few minutes. The car has 70K miles.
Can anybody tell me what the fix is?

    A corworker had this happen on his Malibu. It was the HVAC control unit--luckily, his car was still under warranty, though. Apparently it's easier to change out the whole control box rather than fix the faulty switch.

    It could also be low 134a charge,if low it will cycle on & off.If you are mechanically inclined they sell 134a in 12 oz cans & charge adaptors at Walmart,very reasonable price.

    I have the '97 and it happened around 70k and got it replaced under the extended warranty and it's happening again at 88k.....no more warranty. Very upsetting now that summer is in full swing.
