The rebate here has been $2000 for a long time until now. By the way no more SE's left at the largest Hyundai dealer here. About 80-90 GLS's.

Thanks for the info. SEs are scare so even though I'm against the idea I will need to leave a deposit for the dealer to locate a car. I ran into the same problem while I was hunting for a Honda Civic. Needless to say I couldn't seal the deal anywhere w/o a deposit.
  • ez888ez888 Member Posts: 39
Not sure if anyone else experienced this, but a local dealer in the Chicagoland area just received about 19 more Elantras- all GLSs though. Interesting how they received more when many have said nothing more until 09s- maybe just no more SEs.
  • wide1wide1 Member Posts: 6
Thinking about buying an 08 SE and after following some of the chatter on the board and, after looking at dealer inventory in my area (and contacting a couple dealers), it seems like SE's are in short supply. I want to see if this impression is correct (or if dealers are just trying to put pressure on consumers) or if others have had this experience. Like ez888, I'd be willing to put down a deposit, but really don't want to. Just looking for other's opinions on this.
  • elantra08elantra08 Member Posts: 15
The SE's are in very limited supply, I also had to put a deposit down and the dealer then got me a SE. The first car they were going to get me got damaged in port so i had to wait 2 more weeks for another car. In your case, i would take at least $500-700 off invoice price(depending on added acc). My MSRP for my car was $19,370 and got the car for $16,500(but that was with the $2,000 cash back)+tax and tags. Just make sure the deposit is REFUNDABLE and i would not put down no more than $500 for the car(I know some dealers wanted a $1,000). Good luck!

I really believe a dealer will get you what you want either from another dealer, or the shipping port. Just be firm.
  • wide1wide1 Member Posts: 6
thanks elantra08. two questions: how do I make sure the deposit is refundable (i.e. get this in writing, I assume)? and when you say, 500-700 off invoice, I assume you mean below invoice, right? If that's the case, how do I negotiate that sort of reduction in price (based on the dealer not having to pay interest?)?
  • elantra08elantra08 Member Posts: 15
Where i bought my car, i just told the salemans that i wanted the car but the deposit would have to be refundable. I asked him several times that is was refundable. I told him that i wanted to see the car in person and check out the vehicle to make sure everything was alright. He agreed. (this was on the phone; and then i left the deposit after test driving the floor gls elantra). i would use a credit card just in case the dealer tried to pull anything funny.

As far as pricing, go online and check out where the nearest hyundai dealerships are at and ask for a quote on a Elantra SE w/ whatever opions/colors you wanted. I only wanted sliver or gray and it had to have the sunroof(that was a deal breaker). Once you start getting quotes, look for the best and tell the dealer that you have other lower quotes from other dealerships and ask if they can go below or match. The dealership i bought my car from asked me what is a good number so "we could have your business", lucky they agreed with my price the first time. i was very suprised and this was also the closest hyundai dealship to me, so it worked at very nice. Also ask for the "out the door" pricing cause some dealer will charge you a doc fee/dealer fee and that could be a few hundred dollars. if they dont have any SE's on the lot asked them to get you one. I had all the numbers worked out before they actually got me the car. And yes, i got it below invoice, check out Edmunds TrueMarketValue(TMV).

A few days ago I saw some GLSes being unloaded at a dealer in the Twin Cities. A sales rep there had told me the same thing--no more Elantras until the '09s--but also told me they were looking for Elantras whereever they could get them. So it's possible these were from other dealers. I didn't look at the window stickers.

    Hi ,

I am getting a deal on used 08' Elantra GLS Popular Equipment Package + Sunroof at 12k. It has 8000 miles on it..
It is worth 12k or shall I go for new Elantra?
  • backybacky Member Posts: 18,949
If it's an automatic, it's an $18k MSRP car. So $12k for it is not too bad, but you are losing the powertrain warranty beyond 5 years/60k miles. You might ask the dealer (if it's a Hyundai dealer) what it would cost to add the Hyundai Certified extended warranty, if it's not already included in the $12k quote. Then you could try to get them to "toss it in" for the $12k price. That would then be a heckofa deal I think.

just left there, to try to purchase the Hyundai Elantra 2008. Got quoted a price of $14999.00, internet pricing. Out the door pricing of over $16,499.
went to the dealer at Hyundai city. was quoted payments of $275 for 6 years with out running the credit. I asked whats the interest rate, was told about 10 percent.
Ran the credit, was told credit was in the 700 hundred range. Given a payment of $309 per month for 6 years at 7.9 percent.

Is something wrong with this math, or what?
    I left.
  • bob225bob225 Member Posts: 46
    6 years at 7.9% is $ 288.49 a month. 6 years at 10% is $ 305.68 a month
  • susanerlichsusanerlich Member Posts: 3
obviously there numbers were wrong, and all they wanted to do was pressure me for more deposit monies.
this is the second time this week I have been to Hyundai City, in Edgewater park NJ, and this is the second time I left.
I only went back, because the internet manager emailed me with a cost of $14999, but this was before he told me that the rebate of $1500 was already off.

I already have another Hyundai, thats a 2006 and I had gone there originally in 2006 to try to purchase there before.
the same BS happenend with the high pricing, hence my need to purchase elsewhere and run like a bat out of hell.
I somehow thought that maybe the tactics - of hidden charges - had changed, but I guess not.
Hyundai city will always be Hyundai city. No integrity.

I will have to definately schedule an appointment with the dealership that I purchased from two years ago, even though, its further from my home..
Lets see what I can secure in terms of pricing for a new elantra.
    wish me luck.
I will keep u guys informed!

I just picked up a 2008 GLS with Auto and the PE package for my wife. List was $16,995. I paid $14.6K after the $1,500 rebate. I got it at Manfredi in SI, NY.
    5.49% for 48 months.

trying to buy one (automatic + popular package), had been getting offers ~15,000 (sales price, excluing TTL), anyone know of a better deal? pls help recommend good dealer or salesperson... thanks for advising.
  • trivialpursuittrivialpursuit Member Posts: 2
For those numbers to be accurate, the $275/10% pmt means $14,844 is financed, and the $309/7% pmt has $17672 financed. I'd guess the first number assumes some sort of down payment - in fact it looks like the dealer based this on 10% down. Who knows what they are doing to the second number. Jacking the price back up, force feeding a warranty to you?

Couple things: First, Hyundai's not your only financing option, and 7.9 is not great for a 700 FICO. See if you can arrange your own financing before you close. Dealers do like to sell financing so they may be willing to shave 1/4 point off the rate you get. Second, Hyundai can do better. I know first hand they can go as low as 4.9 without promos - my mom just bought an Elantra and this was her rate. Third, focus on the OTD price and not the payment price. If a dealer expresses a price to you in terms of monthly payment without giving you an OTD, blow by it and get the discussion back to the price of the vehicle.
  • susanerlichsusanerlich Member Posts: 3
As I wrote to Hyundai city ,(and yes I told them) I never trusted them, years ago, and now years later, I still dont trust them, but they are close to where I live, so I figured, when I was driving by, what the heck, maybe things might have changed, and I can really buy from them...
    Guess NOT!

Anyway, just perusing the board, I have decided to try Flemington Hyundai. they quoted me an internet price of $14070 after 1500 rebate, which would mean the cost of the car is $15, 570. this doesnt include tax, or tags.
If I put $1500 downpayment for 60 months at lets say 7.9. whats the monthly payment?
    anyone good with the Math??
I have to admit that this is the lowest quote that I have gotten so far for a Hyundai, with the power package (no sunroof please..lol).
I am dealing with a guy by the name of Jarrett. anyone else has dealt with him?

    Hi everyone,

I'm new here and just realized these wonderful forums for information and advice are available and I'm about ready (as in tonight?) to fork over 19 grand with taxes, etc. for an SE (''08) that has bluetooth and a spoiler. I frankly don't like the spoiler and didn't want it, but, it's all they had left. This rather high price also includes a 1500 rebate, if you can believe that.

So I'm worried that maybe this is too much and I should not go through with it and just pay more for a civic or a Mazda 3 or await the 09's wherein there will be more choices...

Can anyone give me a sense if this is a fair price?

Thanks tons in advance for any guidance....
  • bob225bob225 Member Posts: 46
About 2k to high. You should be able to get a Civic LX for that price.
  • schukanuosladyschukanuoslady Member Posts: 118
Maybe you need to find a new kind of gas to put into your car. I just found this forum as I bought a Elantra GLS with the PZEV emissions and I get great mileage on 87 octane. I get around town with 2 people and the a/c running 24 miles per gallon and about 29 plus on the highway per gallon. I use Gulf or Sunoco Gas. Citgo Cas is crap and so is Valero. I have yet to try Mobil/Exxon. :)
  • schukanuosladyschukanuoslady Member Posts: 118
How far are you from Goshen NY??? Orange County. They are giving the $1,500 rebate and applying it to your down payment. I paid $13995 for my Elantra GLS. 2008. And I had a great salesman. Also the Sales Manager helped lower the price. I had a $2000 rebate when I bought mine and did my financing thru TB BankNorth. I put a chunk of money down. Hubby put down only $1,500 and they applied the $2000 rebate to his down payment too. He paid the same I paid. And he got the cargo mat in the back of the trunk free because we bought 2 cars.
  • ctc1ctc1 Member Posts: 66
I bought a new SE a month ago in NJ without the blue tooth or spoiler but with floor mats, wheel locks and cargo net for 16000 OTD 19000 is way to high. If your willing to go that high get a Civic or Mazda 3 for just a little more.
  • schukanuosladyschukanuoslady Member Posts: 118
I paid $13,995 plus Motor Vehicle fees and tax. Considering the sticker price was $17,080 and hubby's was $17,180 I think we both did good. They are not SE but still, I love the car even though I have to watch the fuel pump problem. We got both cars for the same price. Now, our interest was pretty darn low. 5.9 % for 60 months. I put a lot more money down on mine then hubby did so his payments are higher but I am pretty pleased with what we got. I have a Quicksilver Grey with cloth grey seats and his is Laguana Sand color with beige cloth seat covers. I can't see having heated leather seats. Heck... I went from a Tacoma truck with just a radio and a/c. With all the extras of cruise control, power buttons, alarm system, and XM radio which after 3 months hubby will just add it to his account for his 18 wheeler I think I am in heaven. I never had all these options before. :)

    Hello guys,

I’m planning to buy an Elantra. I already figure out how I can finance the money. I will request the OTD price quotes to the dealers around my area through Edmunds.com. However I’m wondering whether mentioning about the financing will help the deal or not. :confuse:

What do you think guys? Please give me some pointers about the pros and cons of doing this.

    Thank you,
    Jinwook
  • alpine1alpine1 Member Posts: 51
You asked for some pointers about the pros and cons of doing this, "I already figure out how I can finance the money. However I’m wondering whether mentioning about the financing will help the deal or not." My advice is don't finance any car purchase. If you have to finance, you can't afford the car. Save your money and pay in cash for a car you can afford. The world's largest Hyundai dealer Fuccillo, "Mr. Huge", says in his TV commercials advertising "Hugeathon 1000" that cars are the worst investment you can make, so you buy the most for the least. I agree!
  • backybacky Member Posts: 18,949
However... if you can get low-interest financing and get more than that rate in a safe investment or by paying off other debt, then I think it makes sense to finance. Unless of course you pay for the low rate some other way, e.g. by reduced rebates.

I think I got a good price. Bought at Best Hyundai in Houston, TX for

$12,750 before TT&L. Hit 100 miles on the odometer when I was driving home so yes, it was new.

    Floormats, cargo net, mudguards included.

    $16,210 sticker.

Purple Rain Pearl color. It was the last 2008 5 spd with A/C they had. But they had another without A/C. Pass. It's not an option in Houston or probably anywhere in Texas.
  • bonketybonkety Member Posts: 3
I just got the 2008 Elantra for my son. It's a GLS 5-speed with the "popular options package" (A/C, etc.) and paid a final price of $13,500. I know we could have done better here in Portland, Oregon... but we thought we'd done fine. This price is about $100 under invoice, but that's deceptive. Given the $1500 rebate was factored into the final price, I figure the dealer made $1400 (minus any fees or plus any other hold-back). The truth is that we could have driven a deal to just below $13,000 if we tried harder, but he wanted a specific color that required a dealer trade (which put us at a slight disadvantage). The SE would have been about $1500 more (with 5 speed).

If you are willing to drive a hard bargain with the remaining 2008 Elantras (or other models), you could shoot for about $300-500 over invoice and THEN take off the $1500 (which, I think, expires at the end of August). Most won't go for it, but occasionally some will. Right now that rebate is where the dealers are insuring their profit.

They offered financing (since I wanted him to establish credit) and came in with 10.99% which was unacceptable (even with my co-signing - they would have offered him something like 18% otherwise)! So, we took out a loan with our local credit union (we me co-signing) and got 4.99% for 60 months.

    All in all, not bad.

Ok, so I'm looking for a new car as I will be commuting back and forth to college this fall. Decided that I really like the Elantra SE in Regatta Blue with a spoiler on the back and automatic transmission.

I went to my local dealer last night and they had that exact car- An automatic SE, Regatta Blue, with a spoiler. No premium package so there was no sunroof or leather seats.

We started at $16,900 but we eventually talked him down to $15,580. Do you think this is a fair price or can I get it for cheaper? I would really like to get him just below the $15,000 mark, but don't know if it's possible or not.
  • backybacky Member Posts: 18,949
$15,580 is not a bad price at all for a rare and popular car. You could try walking into the dealership tomorrow with a check made out to them for $15,000 (or at least a deposit), tell them you are ready to buy NOW for $15,000 + TTL and see what they say. They might say "yes", or maybe counter-offer. If not, and they let you drive away, you know it's too low. At least for now. But if I were you I wouldn't wait too long to pull the trigger. 2008 SEs are few and far between out there.

One thing you might get them to go for if they won't budge on price is throw in the floor mats, maybe a few oil change coupons. They have your car, you have their money. So, talk with them.
  • anthonyt811anthonyt811 Member Posts: 4
Do you think if I told them to give me one with a sunroof and I'll pay the $15,580 they would do it?
  • backybacky Member Posts: 18,949
You can always try it. The worst that can happen is they say "no". This is assuming they have one with a sunroof in your color, with AT.
  • anthonyt811anthonyt811 Member Posts: 4
I just got the SE with automatic transmission with a rear spoiler and rain guards for $15,580. They said they couldn't go any lower than that. Of course, what he didn't tell us was that we would be taxed on the rebate so the price with tax came out to $17,000. :(

    Was I ripped off?
  • backybacky Member Posts: 18,949
Advice: don't ask that question after you buy. It's too late then.

As I said earlier, the SE is a rare and popular car and you got about $3000 off including the rebate, which is under invoice. That is not bad at all. Enjoy your new car!
  • anthonyt811anthonyt811 Member Posts: 4
Well I'm supposed to officially get it Monday, I gave them $1000 to save it for me so they don't sell it. I can still decline if I want, but I'm not going to. :D
  • kbrienkbrien Member Posts: 6
You were not ripped off. You got a good deal. If you look at my original posting, I bought a 2008 Elantra SE with AT, AC, and not much more, for $16,100 (originally 16,449.) The dealer was selling about 2-3 per week and did not have to negotiate much with me b/c for sure someone else would have bought the car soon after I looked at it. I knew that but unfortunately my back was up against the wall b/c I desperately needed a car, so I made the deal and moved on. They had been selling SEs for ~ $15,500, but those were gone by the time I was ready to buy a car. This is an example of the law of supply and demand and I was buying on the demand side of that famous economic curve. That's life. Overall, I am happy with the car and am planning to hold onto to the car for as long as it will function, and that longevity of ownership will compensate for the purchase price. I've stopped flogging myself over the cost of the car and started enjoying it, and am now paying attention to postings on this site about the function and reliability of the car. I am concerned about the fuel pump issue and you should be too. Although I have had no problems thus far, I will watch this The members of this site have been very helpful and I encourage you to read the postings. BTW, where did you buy the car?

Where in NY are you buying your Elantra GLS? I bought mine in Goshen, NY. They listed it on my bill of sale as $16,000 and took off $2,000 for rebates. But I did have to pay tax on $16,000. So technically I paid $14,000 plus the tax on $16,000 and DMV fees. And they are a Super watch out for the customer dealership. I also have floor mats too. The only thing I bought was a cargo tray for the back. And that cost me $63 plus tax as if you buy anything from the parts Dept there, they take off 10% for buying the vehicle there. And they are giving me my first oil change free. And they are running a sale in the paper now for $14,992 but you can talk them down to $14,000. We did. And the salesman I used is super great.

I have been shopping for a new car for my 17 year old daughter and have been offered a deal of $16,664 for a 2008 Elantra SE (quicksilver with black interior) with the sunroof/heated seats package, carpeted floor mats and the Ipod connection. It is the last Elantra they have in stock and so won't discount it as much as they would the 2009 Sonata that we originally went in to test drive. However, my daughter likes the Elantra better than the Sonata. Is this a reasonable deal? We are also looking at the VW Jetta, but the Elantra SE seems like a lot more car (and warranty) for the money. Thanks for your feedback.
  • mrcellusmrcellus Member Posts: 52
klw1- I think it is a great deal right now -others are paying more. Are ttl, l&r and what not been added or is that the total otd? Even if this is before taxes depending on your credit score and finance its good imo. Others may chime in. Good luck & go get em'.

I bought one 2008 Elantra GLS with popular equipment package (no sunroof) at $13,800 after rebate before taxes and fees from Peninsula Hyundai in Redwood City, California. I have visited Sunnyvale Hyundai, San Leandro Hyundai and Roten Hyundai in Richmond before I placed order to Peninsula Dodge & Hyundai. I got bad experience from Wali, the salesperson of Roten Hyundai.

My husband and I spent the past 3 weeks shopping for a new, 3rd car to use as main transportation for myself and 2 school-aged children. After narrowing down makes and models, we decided we wanted an Elantra GLS, automatic. No frills, just basic stuff. Well, there are 6 Hyundai dealers within a 100-mile radius of our home here in Arkansas. We contacted 5 of those for their best "cash" price. To our surprise, FOUR of those dealers put "addendums" on all of their Elantras. This raises the price $800 to $2000 ABOVE MSRP!!!! What was really ridiculous was we had to ask, repeatedly, just what had been added to these cars by the respective dealers to raise their selling prices. One dealer adds: pinstriping, fabric treatment and a full tank of gas for $2000, and "throws in" an additional $500 dealer rebate. One dealer adds: window tinting, fees for secretarial paperwork necessary to process the dealer acquisition & sale of the car, and fees for the mechanic that has to check the car for factory defects before it can be sold, for $1,000-1,500. If they weren't actually seriously asking us to pay extra for this stuff, we might have laughed...These dealers claimed that they made only $125-500 for Elantras when sold at MSRP, so they had to help their profits with "addendums". Hmmmm...I think I should contact Hyundai and let them know that their Elantra salespeople are starving to death!!! We finally found a dealer, 75 miles from our hometown, who would sell us an Elantra for LESS THAN sticker, without any addendums added. We drove the 75 miles and wrote them a check. Love the car. Hated the ridiculous sales tactics!! (One other had offered to remove the price of the addendums ONLY if we paid exact sticker AND financed thru them.) Anyone else had similar experience with these tactics when looking at Elantras?
  • pauleyepauleye Member Posts: 11
Sounds very strange. Here in the North Los Angeles area the only issue was how much below sticker they were willing to go. Sounds like you got your deal eventually, though had to drive a while to get it.
Glad you didn't succumb to those stupid sales tactics. Hope those guys end up having to give their Elantras away.
  • bonketybonkety Member Posts: 3
Yes very weird... though maybe the factory rebate has expired now in September. Car sales are way down, and I think most are hard-up. IF the rebate remains, then there is no way you should pay above INVOICE (which will gives them a tidy profit).
  • bhmr59bhmr59 Member Posts: 1,602
Those shady tactics aren't limited to Elantra sales, or Hyundai dealerships for that matter. I've seen it at GM, Ford & Chrysler dealers in the past.

BTW, the difference between invoice & MSRP on the Elantra is around $500, I'd have to look it up but you can find it on Edmunds. Dealers must get these cars for a good amount below invoice. Volume dealers sell below invoice month after month. (Maybe that's why they're high volume dealers.) Towne, in NJ, is currently offering $1500 below invoice on the Elantra GLS--you have to call for SE pricing--and this is before the general rebate in effect for September.
  • vavavoomvavavoom Member Posts: 42
looking at the elantra for a friend - having just bought a new higer end car, the way hyundai pricing works just seems a little strange (e.g. invoice being only like $500 less than sticker but dealers selling way less than invoice). In any case, would someone in MA area comment if 14K + $250 doc fee for a GLS Auto with Popular E Package is a good price. the Next closest quote i've found is $700 more.

I seem to remember someone asking where they could get seat covers for the 2008 Hyundai Elantra's. Well, I found this website and my husband ordered the Scotch Guard for us. So I am just posting this for anyone who wants to protect their new seats in their Elantra's. My husband already spilled soda on his one front seat and I had to use an oxi-product for cars to get the soda out and even though I did it 5 times, there is still a slight showing of a circle from the soda. These are custome seat covers and made to order. They take 2 weeks to come by UPS to you.

    www.seatcovers.net/hyundai-seat-covers.html

You may have to go to the homepage of www.seatcovers.net to pick out the car as I am having a hard time getting the link in.
