Know anything about piston/pinging/engine problems on the supercharged 5.4? Saw something on another board about it. Please tell me your experiences, good AND bad.
  • maxpressmaxpress Member Posts: 19
I have 3800 miles on my Lightning - no problems with the engine.
  • barlitzbarlitz Member Posts: 752
There shouldn't be any problems with the lightning engines, they have been reworked the pistons have been forged and the compression reduced. The problem you read has affected some 5.4 engines not all and especially not the lightnings.

Hi Barlitz, spoke with you way back before I got my Lightning. I agree with you that it shouldnt affect our engines , but why does it sound clackety-clack lke a diesel during warm up. Others have the same observation. By the way I grew up n your area. Miss the clams.

I haven't noticed any noises on my truck yet,I've got 2300 miles and have had the oil changed once already. If you are hearing any weird noises I would call your dealer or even call svt.How many miles on your truck and what kind of fuel do you use.I use sunaco ultra 93 octane.

  • barlitzbarlitz Member Posts: 752
After I read your post I went out and started mine,I didn't hear any strange noises I also popped the hood only heard slight ticking which I'm sure is normal, also hear same ticking in my other vehicle.

I haven't decided to sell mine yet,I really don't want to,we'll see what happens, do you have an idea what a good price to ask for.all options plus lojack, hinge mount tonneau, bedliner, all weather cover,2300 miles,10 coats of liquid glass polish looks like just left showroom.

    Thanks Barlitz

I've had my black lightning for a month, what a blast! Any ideas on a bra/bug deflector? Here in VT I spend lots of time cleaning bugs off the front end! BTW Heritage Ford of VT still has a black Lightning on the lot, drove by it today. Call them, ask for Carmen, tell her Mark sent ya!
  • brudnerbrudner Member Posts: 20
Mark Try Invinca-Shield e-mail: invincainc@alltel.net. Im getting it for my white lightning. Don't have many bugs here in coastal socal but I used to live in NH so I know what you mean.
  • barlitzbarlitz Member Posts: 752
My lightning is black that's why I'm constantly cleaning it,black is a hard color to keep clean and yah my arms are tired no more need to go to the gym.I would be interested in that invinca-shield what is it?is it an actual cover?

I'm gonna hold on to it for now its just to much fun to drive.

It wont keep your whole truck clean. It guarantees to prevent your front end or what ever its covered with from stone chipping ,etc. Its a 10mil innvisable film made by dupont ,I think, thats custom cut in pieces and can be prof. applied. Check it out . I left their e-mail on my last message. My last 4 cars were black. I became a slave for my last cobra.Black is my favorite but I chose white for my lightning.
Besides as everyone knows ford makes the white ones a litle faster.
Hope you decide to keep yours.
  • maxpressmaxpress Member Posts: 19
My is red and almost as tough to keep clean. The bugs are murder regardless of the color. I have a Lund (clear) bug shield on my. It does a great job for the hood and windshield. I almost purchased a LaBra for it, but it only covers the grill area and up (not the bumper).
  • maxpressmaxpress Member Posts: 19
I just called Invinca-Shield and they have the Lightning kit. The cost $150.00 for the full front (hood, grill area, bumper, fog lights and spoiler). You can call before 12:00 and they ship the same day. They also have the applications for the ground effects, roof, a pillars etc. I tried the invincainc@alltel.net and it did not work (I'm on AOL) so I tried Invinca-shield.com and the site came up.

hope you "typical Lightning owners" can convince this 50 Y.O. midlife-crisis M.D. to actually close the deal, it's not really me but I want one... two concerns: safety, and snow -- what do you think?
  • barlitzbarlitz Member Posts: 752
The lightning is very safe, dual air bags, side intrusion beams.but its only as safe as its driver any vehicle at a high rate of speed forget about it,as far as the snow I know people who have older lightnings they use a seperate set of rims and snow tires and weigh down the bed.I bought a second little front wheel drive beater car for commuting to work and for the winter, don't think I want to drive mine in the snow, you don't see to many high performance vehicles in the snow and thats what the lightning is high performance.

    Good Luck

Anybody know about a nitrous kit for the '99 Lightnings? Also, what does the chip actually do to increase horsepower and where can I get one? Steve in SoCal...
  • brudnerbrudner Member Posts: 20
stevebopp check out www.f150online.com there is a message board listing for lightnings only, including info on NOS. Where are you in socal . Im in San Clemente mit white 99 Lightning

This is one thrilling ride, If you think that sports cars are fun to drive, then persist on testing driving this truck and the decision will be made for you.ujammer
  • ujimenezujimenez Member Posts: 5
I read this week in Mustang Monthly that if you just change the pully on the charger(with a smaller one I believe) and go to cat back exhaust and a super chip, your lightning should dip into the mid twelves in quarter mile.
  • gwerksgwerks Member Posts: 3
Anyone heard of someone trying to make the SVT Tires in Chrome.
  • brudnerbrudner Member Posts: 20
chrome tires would look cool but I think they would ride pretty noisy and hard. Now....chrome wheels ARE avalable and do look great ..
  • doug46doug46 Member Posts: 2
I have a 19999 Red Lightening, Is this super chip worth installing and how much does it cost. Has anyone considered running the exhaust out the back and how did they go about it ? Does anyone know where to get a piece to replace the cutout one where the side exhaust exit now.Any ideas for increased performance. Thanks for any information. Doug.

Hey Doug, isn't 360 ponies enough. I can't imagine why anyone would want to do anything to that beautiful truck
  • brudnerbrudner Member Posts: 20
I have been following the f150 bullitin board for a few months now. There appears to be a cosistant .5 second and 3-4 miles/hr qaarter mile improvements with superchip. They claim about 400 flywheel hp Itapparantly also improves the shifting, esp the 2-3 shift. Ive decided to order on. Why dont you checkout the f150 board on the net. Theresa whole area for lightnings..

On your lightning price, get ready for $30,000. And no discounting or Ford A plan. Add for rareity??? Nice truck though, looked at one and bought a new Tundra, v8 from Lexus.
  • barlitzbarlitz Member Posts: 752
The lightning is pricy but worth every penny,it gets rave reviews from all magazines and owners,How could you go from a lightning to a tundra two completely different trucks, personally I couldn't buy foriegn I just wouldn't feel right.

    Good Luck
  • gwerksgwerks Member Posts: 3
I meant to say wheels. So does anyone make the SVT wheels in chrome. Also I just finished buying my lightning and just found out about piston slap concerns, how severe is this problem among Lighting owners. Where can I locate this superchip everyone is clamoring about and how much does it cost.
  • felix4felix4 Member Posts: 4
    barlitz
The tundra is assembled in the united states, if you look at the f150, I'm sure many parts are sourced from other countries. Only difference is your money is going to a japanese company instead of an american one...although Ford really isn't an American company...it's an international corporation, pretty sure Toyota is too. Although I agree with you it kinda doesn't feel right buying a Toyota, so I hear ya.
Oh yeah, I think the trucks are actually pretty similar. They look alike (Toyota stole the styling) and they both have overcam engines, but the Toyota is only 7/8 the size(big enough for most but not all of us out there). The Tundra is significantly cheaper. If I had the dough definately the Lightning, but a man can dream can't he? Until then, I'm looking at cheaper trucks.

Sorry for my rambling, just my $.02

Hope everyone loves their purchase regardless of what company made it.

Has anyone tried the Power Surge Cone Filter, or know anything about it? What is everyone using to clean and protedt the suede leather seat? Has anyone considered running the exhaust out the rear, if so, how did they go about it?Thanks for any responses. Doug.
  • barlitzbarlitz Member Posts: 752
How is my money going to a Japanese company?Anyways it doesn't matter what truck you drive as long as you are happy with it.

    Good Luck

Check out www.F150 online ,there are all sorts of topics in the lightninjg discussion room on mods for the truck.

anyone out there selling there lighting please let me know, Also are they coming out with a 2000 lighting?....
  • barlitzbarlitz Member Posts: 752
I just traded my 99 Lightning for a F250 XLT 4x4 supercab. There is a dealer in my area that has a 99 black with 1800 miles selling for $27900.He also has 5 new 99's,I live in Boston. They will be building 24000 lightnings over the next 6 years so the run will be to the year 2005.
  • mike264mike264 Member Posts: 3
May I ask why you traded your lighting ?.......
  • danbodandanbodan Member Posts: 23
I owned a Lighting for about 6 months and also traded it in for a extra cab. It is a great vehicle but found it not very practicle for the kids. It is kinda like owning a nice sports car with the exception I could still go to home depot. Anyone know if they will ever make a extra cab lighting? This is a great truck for a single person or someone that can spare the money.
  • barlitzbarlitz Member Posts: 752
Like Danboden said it is a great truck, but living in Boston and working downtown on construction sites and with the winter coming its just impracticle it will be useless in the snow.I love my new truck even better than the lightning,I miss blowing every one away at lights with the lightning but even that gets old,as much fun as the lightning was sooner or later its just another truck and it is expensive to maintain.
  • asdemanasdeman Member Posts: 9
I don't understand your statement on expensive to maintain. I have a 99.5 Red Lighting. My premiums
on my insurance went down considerably. As far
as maintaining the vehicle I've always took exceptional care of all my vehicles and the Lighting does not cost anymore or anyless to maintain than a BMW,F150 XLT lariet or any other
    vehicle I ever owned.
  • danbodandanbodan Member Posts: 23
Wait till you have to get a set of those 18" tires. They are not designed to last 40-50K miles like other truck tires. Fast cornering, burnouts will also make them go quick. Don't tell me you wont do burn outs or don't corner quick in this thing. If you don't, you should sell it because that is what it is designed for. Your looking at around 1k on tire day.
  • barlitzbarlitz Member Posts: 752
I also scraped a rim, minor scrape $450 for a new rim,I also ran my lightning with the 94 ultra its up to over 1.45 a gallon. The insurance is the same as any other truck,I am also a psycho as far as cleaning and waxing there was a lot of hard labor involved in maintaining a black lightning.I do miss the lightning, But I like my new F250 XLT just as much if not more and in the long run its probably a better value there's more use for it.Either way I think Ford builds a great truck.

    Good Luck

During the six months that you owned your "SVT" you can't say those where the best six months you ever had in a truck. Sorry to see that you had to sacrifice your "SVT" for reality.
  • danbodandanbodan Member Posts: 23
I could tell you about the best 60minutes in my truck but Edmunds might not approve. It was a chick magnet, I always had woman flirting with me in other Fords. It was fun to drive(only 1 ticket)but I got tired of only being able to have two people in the vehicle. I also have a boat(which it towed fine)and had to have friends drive behind me in their car to go boating with me. I couldn't even pick up my parents at the Air Port. I had to put stuff in the back on rainy days. I might get another one if they make a extended cab.
  • barlitzbarlitz Member Posts: 752
I did read somewhere that in 2001 the lighhtning will be availible as an all wheel drive supercab with a possible supercharged V10.Ford is also coming out with a Harley Ford next year which will look somewhat like a lightning but an extend a cab with 20' rims and an exhaust system with the harley roar to it no supercharger but you could always put one in also lots of chrome and a special interior.
  • asdemanasdeman Member Posts: 9
I'm not worried about paying a little more money for very High Quality tires every 3 years, this by no means makes it expensive to maintain. With the money I save from my Insurance premiums are going to offset the cost for the high quality tires. As far as oil changes, tire rotations, brake jobs, and tune-ups they are the same costs that you would pay for a normal nonaspirated vehicle.
But in the long run this vehicle will save you maintenance cost with the heavy duty transmission and coolers, super cooled radiator system, forged pistions and heavy duty braking system.

    Later cheapo's,
    SVTMAN
