1999 chev silverado with 404 miles on it will not
crank and run.a chev dealer has put in 4 driveshaft

computers now they are replacing the motor[buy the
way i am not the first one with the problem,i found
out that beside the crankshaft where the siencor
fits are not forge right, wonder what that will cost
gm if they admitt to it] here i am with a new
truck that the motor is comming out, from the gm man
he said i could trade it in but would not give me
what i paid for it or he could extent the warant a
little bit but didn't say how much.i think i will
have a talk with my lawer as this would no longer
be a new truck with another motor

It became a used truck as soon as you bought it. I think a new engine is a pretty easy swap. Which truck engine did you get? It sounds like your problem is the crankshaft position sensor.

what is a sincor or lawer? Do you mean sensor and lawyer or what?

We have had to replace one engine at our dealership for a nocking on a cold idle(rod bearing) GM shipped a whole engine right off the line. All that needed to be done was plug it in, really no lie. Our dealership sells alot of the new trucks, yes there are some problems with them. But it is a first year run. I would say GM did pretty good for how many things were changed.
Oh ya manuel seats seem to have a flaw they have a plastic piece that explodes and the seat won't lock in to place anymore.

Speaking of seats, you should also mention that
the power buckets seats have a technical assistance bulletin issued to all Chevy Dealers
stating they clunk and have excessive free play
in them and the stated resolution should also
be included in the bulletin. I'll take my chances
with the manual seats and save almost $800.00
by the time you add power bucket seats. I don't
care anymore since I got rid of the junker.
1995-1998 power and manual seats on Chevy trucks
also had a similar problem with the track mechanism operating the seat properly. Why can't
Chevy learn from past mistakes and build a decent
quality seat whether power or manual?

I agree power seats are not worth the money they are to slow and if your that lazy you can't reach down to slide your seat forward well you know.

the new seat tracks are TOTALLY different, but nun the less there seems to be a design flaw.

Strange how some of the seats have problems and some do not?? Mine are fine?
  • chevy4mechevy4me Member Posts: 203
I have the power buckets and have had no problems.
Also one can fine tune the seat while cruising I find this to be nice on long trips.
  • cornhusker1cornhusker1 Member Posts: 22
I love my power seats. PERFECT
  • DavyddDavydd Member Posts: 121
When you share your truck with someone who has entirely different seat preferences the power seats shine with the two memory adjustment.

My power seats work fine as well.
  • cookie1cookie1 Member Posts: 68
If the power bucket seats work fine, no need
to let me know. I just know that there is a
problem with some, not all. Don't ask me why.
GM cannot even figure that one out.

    To All,
I think GM should look at the assembly plants for quality issues. I work in an FDA regulated industry that COULD NOT tolerate this! They have no one to answer to(except Joe consumer). Are you going to die if your seat fails, tranny vibrates, engine pings, dash rattles, I can go on. These workers are like the rest of us who can't wait to get away work and do what it is they do. How would some of you out there like it if I failed to my job and you were hurt in some way or DIED! You wouldn't. I take pride in what I do for all of you and so should the rest, NO MATTER WHAT THE PRODUCT. I'm failing to see this anymore.

I'm all for improving quality at assembly plants.

But how did we all manage before we had federal servants to save us?

I hope since you have volunteered for whatever noble service you are performing, that you keep in mind that it isn't necessary to be federally regulated to take pride in your work, nor does one have to be in the private sector to be imperfect.

I'm an engineer for a medical products co. making implantable devices. While the GM product would be way more bug free, it would cost more than $100,000 if subjected to the heavy burden of FDA QA.
Plus, most of these complaints are relatively minor annoyances. If we were driving around in 'clapper' vehicles which most of us owned in HS and college, we would think we had died and gone to heaven if the worst problems were shudder or ping or clunky seats......

Amen to that. I've driven some gosh-awful junk in my day and my new truck, although it has a minor squeak, is still a dream. Sure I paid lots of money for it, and expect it to be trouble-free. But I never expected it to be perfect.

You want to have better Quality at GM Plants??...

    GET RID OF THE UNION!!

Get some good people in there who actually want to work and feel proud of what they have done. Not these cry babies who come and work 6 and get payed for 8..and can do nothing but [non-permissible content removed] for $60K a year.

Nobody gives a hoot anymore about Pride and Quality...There is your problem.

I can't believe some of the salaries I hear from these people. I'm an aerospace engineer for a major defense contractor designing some rather complex real time thermodynamic models for some new jet engines, and I'm getting paid the same as a guy bolting in car seats. I'm not saying the union has not done a lot of great things to make work life better for everyone, but I think they are getting a little too greedy these days.

    Mike

P.S. For the kind of money they are already getting, I expect a good job.
  • mgdvhmanmgdvhman Member Posts: 4,157
Nothing wrong with making good money...Show us a worthy product!!

Somewhere the Union does some good....but most of the stories I hear here in the Motor City...It's just an excuse to Screw off at work.

I know one guy..his job is rarely called for..but he has to be there..he has a concession like booth where he sells snacks/pop/coffee..etc...IN the plant..while he gets payed for the other title!

When he retires..he is going to sell that space to someone else.

These guys need to be trained for more than one Job...but the union says no

Someday...I'll have my dream come true

Manuel Seats? Wasn't he a shortstop for the Yankees in the 70's?

I test drove a Silverado w/4.8 motor 4wd. After just drving it 5 miles the LOW COOLANT message showed on the message center. However, observing the coolant overflow tank showed Plenty of coolant in it. If this is what a 99 is like, Iam DEFINITELY sticking with my 98!!!!!

At least it wasn't the coolant was low, and the light didn't come on. However that wouldn't ruin the motor either, since it has the "limp-home" feature.
Try a 2000, I waited a year to let the bugs get worked out.

I believe people have gotten used to buying things that are not perfect or close to it, BUT PEOPLE we are spending a lot of money on these new cars and trucks and getting vehicles that need new engines, center steer being out, seats that are faulty, brakes that could be much better, and especially the poor quality control.
I drove 2 new 1999 chevy S-10 blazers that the center console was about to fall out, one of the door panels was falling off.
If this was a TV and I bought it I would of exchanged it for a new one, or got my money back
without much of a hassle. GM quality? The quality coming out of Canada seems to be a bit better than the US plants. What do you people think?
  • lvstanglvstang Member Posts: 149
    That you are from Canada.
  • powercatpowercat Member Posts: 96
The reason this junk is falling apart is because that's what it is, JUNK! If you want quality, buy something with quality. "GM Quality" is an oxymoron. Like a rock, it lies there and does nothing. No tow and no go.
  • lneillneil Member Posts: 9
    Sorry not from Canada.

Are people having the same problems with the year 2000 models? I am in the market to purchase a new 2000 1500 extra cab 2WD, but am concerned about the issues raised here. I practice lemon law here in California, but I have not yet seen any cases involving the 2000 trucks.

I bought a 99 Silverado in April and have an intermittent rattle coming from under the hood that is hard to pinpoint. I have taken it to two dealers and they have both said a lot of the 99s have the noise. This is totally unacceptable to me and I am going this week to trade in my Chevy and get a Toyota. I had a Toyota for 10 years before I bought this Chevy and never had any problems from my Toy. I learned my lesson.

Even though I'm a GM person if I was buying a vehicle for towing I would choose the Ford F250 witht he Power Stroke Diesel. The V10 may look nice but the fuel mileage is lousy all the time. I know a person with the Ford Power Stroke that tows a large trailer that has a helicopter on it and gets 20MPG hauling and has gotten as high as 25MPG on the highway not hauling. I think that would be enough to convince anyone. If not... my best friends brother is a service manager at a local Ford dealer and even he said the Power Stroke is the only way to go with hardly any problems. It is an under rated motor.

    bob259,
I'm sorry, but I have difficulty believing your friend's mileage on the PSD. Not hauling, maybe, just maybe, with a tail wind and all down hill; 20 MPG.

Using the cruise control will substantially improve mileage on a diesel. I've gotten 19 at speeds 65 to 75. If I slowed down to 55, maybe 20 MPG. I don't think 25 MPG is realistic in any real world driving situation.
