These qualities (approachable performance, just enough power, great handler) are reasons why the other sports compacts like the GTI are popular. It's also why if this car was a HATCHBACK IT WOULD BE PERFECT.
Haha duck87 beat me to the GTI comment. Was going to say basically the same thing. Not sure how the BRZ would look as a hatchback though with such a low rooline.
For the BRZ to be a hatchback they would have had to stiffen the chassis more to maintain the same level of chassis stiffness. It would have added between 80 to 100 pounds to the car and made it more difficult to convert to a convertible. That is why it was ruled out.
