    When my wife and I had the same engine in a Jetta we got 24 mpg on tanks that were mostly city commuting and barely made 30 on open roads.

    Wow - glad commenting is back (probably jinxed it by saying...). The Beetle will end up with a lifetime average of 25, like the GTI did. That's pretty damn good, considering the power. My GTI will do 32 on the open road at 70.
