Audi A4 Synthetic Oil?

When I purchased my 2001 Audi A4 1.8T, the dealer told me that the car came from the factory with synthetic oil. Since the car has 4 years of free maint. I am not going to change the oil myself or pay anyone to do it. However, the dealer also told me that synthetic oil is not included in the free maint. and would cost extra.
My first change is at 5000, but I need to add some oil before this interval.
Is it ok to mix regular and synthetic and when the oil change interval comes around will it be fine to put regular in the car? I have heard many stories about once you go synthetic you can't go back, is this true and if so why not?
Anyone else have the dealor tell them that their A4 came with synthetic? Is there anyway to tell if it is really sythetic?

The only cars that normally come with synthetic do so with the understanding that synthetic will be used for the entie life, true of Mercedes, Corvettes etc. For a dealer to say the car came with it but will not replace it under the maintenance agreement is pure bull.

I will bet that the fee they wish to charge for you to get synthetic will be more then you could get it done elsewhere?? I would go up the ladder on this one, pure dealer misrepresentation.

You can also bring your own synthetic and have them put it in free, an alternative and not that expensive.

Yes, you can mix dino and synthetic with no harm but I would not, defeats some of the benefits.

Its not gonna hurt, but as armtdm says you wlll not be getting the benefit. You can also go from syn to dino and vice-versa, but I don't think much of that either. The dealer is hosing 'ya.

I also have a 2001 A4 and the dealer is not lying to you. The car came from the factory with 0W-30 syn oil and unless you bring in your own syn, the oil you get will be dino (5W-30, I think).

I bought 4 quarts of Mobil 1 0W-30 and brought it in for my 5000 mile service to have it put in. Only costs ~$20 every 5 months. No big deal.

Just go buy a quart of Mobil 1 and put it in if you need more oil in the interim.

Audi puts in. Then again I suppose they rebottle it.

This is really funny. Audi strongly recommends synthetic oil ... and say they'll change your oil for free for 4 years ... but they won't do it correctly for free. What's the point? Did they carefully explain this to you before you bought the car? Why do I think the answer to that question is "no"? >;^)

My response? Avoid Audis like the plague. >:^D But, I suppose if I owned one, I'd buy my own oil (Mobil 1 - 5W30 should be fine) and bring it to those losers and have them do it. Still, I'd give them a dirty look with each and every visit. They sure deserve it.

Oh, and insist that they give you ever unused drop. If your quart capacity is 4.5 quarts, you'll have to give them 5 ... but make sure you get that 1/2 quart back for your use as top-off oil!
