I've put on 4400 miles with my Focus ST and have a combined average of 27.3 mpg aproximately 80% highway 20% city. I found that the mpg does not change using 87 or 91 octane. I am running low resistance winter Yokohama Ice Guard tires which may be helping the mpg but that would be countered with the loss in mpg using the winter blend gas. Try shifting closer to the suggested RPMs and you may find that better gas mileage can be achieved.

How did you get such awful mileage on a road trip?
