hank39, under the Ford emblem there's a recess that gives a convenient place to lift. Also, in this recess is a remote release button/pad. So, basically the complaint in this post makes no sense because you can place your hand where release button is, unlocking the liftgate, and raise the liftgate without needing to move your hand.
For one thing, you don't lift it from the "gap", you lift it from the handle niche above the license plate, where the manual release lives. The ones I've tried seemed nicely weighted and counterbalanced, but I'm used to liftbacks. It's possible it's not aligned quite right, too.
I get why it's inconvenient that the hatch has a high(er) effort to lift it, but isn't the complaint about how far it "pops" kind of moot because it has a handle built-in above the license plate? My car (E46) has the same issues, but I like that it barely pops because at least it forces people to use the handle and nothing rustles my jimmies like fingerprints around the edge of the trunk.
wdrauch - It surprises me how dense some of the Edmunds 'specialists' can be sometimes. Regarding the power hatch, though, don't give Ford any ideas! The Focus is already a porker.

On my ST3, I still have to manually raise the hatch.
